The Colt Detective Special began it's appearance in 1927 as a 2" barrel version of Colt's Police Positive. The first Detective Specials were chambered in .32 caliber and 38 Special, with the latter being the most popular. Designed for ease of carry and concealment; These small steel frame, six round, double action revolvers became the choice of many professionals for many years, from 1927 until 1986. In 1993 Colt brought back the Detective Special of it's third model design with the shrouded extractor rod and round butt grip frame. Remaining with the Solid Steel Colt "D" size frame, until being discontinued again in 1995. Other Colt versions of the snub nose "D" frame 38 specials included the aluminum alloy frame Cobra, the Aircrewman, the Courier, and the Agent. In 1997 Colt introduced the stainless Detective Special II, with new internal safety features incorporated into the lockwork, with a transfer bar safety mechanism. The DS II was chambered in 38 special, and in 1998 offered in .357 magnum as well. In 1994 I took Colt up on it's offer to acquire a standard version of the DS, with it's blued finish, and acquired the Custom Shop version, with the bobbed hammer, action job, and tritium front sight. For the time being; These are of the last of the solid carbon steel frame Detective Specials. The grips are from Hogue
