The S&W Model number suffix notes a change in that particular model's design. The most significant changes to the 29-3, from that of the 29-2, was eliminating the cylinder's counter bored chambers and the pinned barrel. The people at S&W decided the screw threads seemed to be sufficient in securing the barrel to the frame, and there was no need to continue pinning the barrel to the frame. The grip stocks changed in design, as well. Other than these changes, the 29-3, which was manufactured from '82 until '88, bore the same resemblance to the 29-2 , using the 6" inch standard length barrels, as opposed to the 6 1/2".
