I friend and I were recently discussing how much ammo we have on hand. He doesn't keep more than a box or so around. He'll go out and buy a few boxes whenever we go shooting. He thinks I'm nuts. I think I may just be a little lazy ;D. I usually have ~1000rds of each caliber on hand. I hate shopping, even for ammo. When I buy, I buy in bulk either online, or at a local store.

A box or so?? I find more than that in my shoes when I take them off. ;D
Actually, I have quite a few calibers. The problem I run into is storage. Because I have children around the house, I try to keep even ammo under lock and key. I do keep some of my military ammo outside the safe, but it is in sealed spam cans. I like to have at least 1000 rounds of my most commonly used calibers.
Needless to say, I also buy in bulk.

TA, If you are looking to lock some of those ammo cans, there are some commercial products out there. I have this one www.imsplus.com/ims3.html (it is near the bottom of the page.) There is also a home version that works as well. I have done it on a can or two as well. (probably no longer air/water tight, but it could be if I had used some gasket material.) I found a webpage describing it.... www.alpharubicon.com/bovstuff/lockingammocant.htm

Thanks 5ontarget, I could use some of those. Most of the military ammo I have out are in steel sealed cans that require a can opener and a lot of patience to open. Using the supplied can opener, I wonder how soldiers in the field were able to get them open in a timely fashion. I have some 8mm that comes in a sealed tin that only requires pulling the tee handle and then the wire cuts through the tin.

I also buy 1000 rounds at a time but run out quickly so how much I have at any time is variable. I ended up with so many ammo boxes, I put them out in the trash.
