Misfit; There are many Ruger owners, but with the double action revolvers, S&W has been around since the beginning and some people are catching up with their past on these guns. It took me many years to acquire my first S&W, and many more to catch up on the ones I always wanted. I finally picked up on a Ruger Super Redhawk, after ending up with four Smith & Wessons chambered in the same 44 magnum cartridge. The Rugers are very difficult to beat for the price, and they are very strong guns. The older S&W and Colts are more polished, and getting harder to find at good prices, that's why many grab the opportunity to get on a good one when it happens. Ruger will always offer fine handguns at reasonable prices, and many put them on the back burners for that very reason. Manufacturers like S&W and Colt are always changing, either ceasing production, discontinuing model numbers, or increasing prices. Every S&W I own is a discontinued Model, whether I bought it new or used, and every Colt I own is about the same story. This puts the handgun buyer in a frenzy to hold on to what he has, or try to obtain the guns he missed out on when they were new.

DA, I know I know! I recently brought my 1911 to a gunsmith for a trigger job and new sights, and saw a S&W 586 in their used gun display case. I didn't ask to look at it, because I was in a hurry, but when I go to pick up my gun next week, I'm hoping it will still be there. It looks like a 4" full underlug version, and also looks little used, from the deep bluing I saw. They're asking $450, and I know this particular shop seems to want retail or near-retail for most of the trade-ins and other used stuff they sell (they're also selling a Colt 70 series for $925) so I wonder if this is a fair price or if I should pass. I passed on another used 586 when I bought my 66 brand new in a combo with a Rossi 92, and I think about that 586 that got away a lot.

When S&W discontinues such a good revolver like the 586, it has many dealers running up the price of used ones. I've had mine since it was new in 1982, and would not part with it. Although my preference in barrel length is four inches, my six inch 586 will continue to serve me for target shooting. After acquiring a six inch Python and 586; I doubt if I'll ever find it necessary to purchase another six inch .357 magnum, double action revolver.
