I can't seem to stop buying project guns. Here's a couple of my future rainy day projects. Like my home renovation isn't enough. I know bad lighting, I was in a hurry, and I'm naturally a terrible photographer. Combine the two, and you've got this... Besides, it hides how ugly they are right now. Someday, when I get to them, I'll post the pictures of them cleaned up. The top is a 2A (7.62x51), and the bottom is a 2 groove No4MK1. I haven't touched the No4MK1, but I have taken most of the black paint off of the 2A, and done some initial stock cleanup.

What's the plan for them? Do you clean them up and then an oil finish, or does it get a varnish of some sort?

The 2A will probably get a couple coats of a wiping lacquer/varnish type finish. Something like Formby's Tung Oil Finish, or TruOil. The No4 will probably get a pure tung oil finish. I know the original finish was boiled linseed oil, but I prefer pure tung oil. It is more durable, and doesn't darken with age like BLO. The metal will soak in a hot solution of some degreaser. Hopefully, that will also loosen some of the black paint the Indians applied to them. I have most of it off of the 2a. If it doesn't come off, I'll put some paint stripper on it. What's next after that? I'm not sure, if there is decent bluing or parkerizing, I'll leave it. If there is a lot of bare metal, I probably reblue them, maybe I'll try my hand at duracoating. That's quite a ways off still, so I have time to think about it.

The Mark 4 series are pretty well the best of the series. I have several over the years myself. They are still in use by the Canadian Rangers in the far North as they will work in the worst of the winter conditions they get up there. They are slowly switching over to the newer Colt style rifles but the Mark4s soldier on as they are extremely well made and just don't seem to jam in the really cold weather way up North. Ammo is also cheap and fairly easy to obtain as well. They are a great hunting rifle for sure.
