So today I was handed a H&K VP9 and told to try the trigger. Of course I had to comment about how I hate striker-fired pistols, but since I am a big H&K fan, I racked the slide and pulled the trigger. There is a long take-up, but then after you feel resistance you get a clean break. I guessed it was about 4lbs, but according to the documentation it is 5.4lbs. Recall that H&K started the polymer craze with the VP70. Their web-site shows it far better than I could: hk-usa.com/hk-models/VP9/She had two: one had night-sights and the other didn't. Holding it up and looking through the sights, I liked the one without night-sights best. Big question is: when will I get the time to shoot it. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks. Oh, why I was at the shop was to pick up the Bone Collector If you look at their web-site (the URL is long, just click on where I typed: "Bone Collector". S&W states that only 1000 will be made. So now I know that S&W is run by Democrats because on the slide is says nnnn of 1500. Liars!!! Edited to state: Okay they aren't liars, I'm an idiot. I have the 460XVR and the link above is for the S&W 500. So here is a link for the PDF for the one I have: Bone Collector in 460XVR

....Yeah; S&W is no longer run by the same people, that owned it during the 80's. ....and these Clinton Locks, made into the lockwork on the frame. Better yet; Stick with the older S&W Revolvers. S&W Semi-Autos ?....Never had much use for them.

Well in defense of S&W pistols: the S&W 952 that I have is pretty sweet. It may not be as accurate as my Sig P210, but it has never had me bleed from hammer bite either. Then of course is the S&W 41 in 22LR, but target pistols are really in a class by themselves.

So I finally got the time to go shoot the VP9. The range officer was tardy and several of us sat around talking and I let them dry-fire the VP9. One person whose national match titles I've lost count of, racked and tried the trigger numerous times. His comment was: "that isn't just a good trigger for a striker-fired pistol, that is just a good trigger.
The range officer finally showed up and shot 5 rounds through the pistol. His comment was: "I have to have one".
There had been a lot of modifications to the range including large metal overheads that extended out over the firing portion. It blocked the light so they had installed electric lights. However, it also amplified the sound, which I was told was a factor of 3X. I don't know if that is accurate, but I do know that the noise was causing me to flinch. So at first I pulled a few rounds off the center, but after settling down, I found all the rounds went into the center hole.
One comment I received was: "Hey, you just can't go wrong buying an H&K". I have to agree with that, but I paid a lot of money for the Mark 23. This thing had better not equal the precision of the Mark 23.
As much as I love my 1911's, if I could only have one pistol, I'd have a hard time between H&K and Ruger. (Yes, Ruger makes an excellent 1911 and I own one and think it is a great value [i.e. what you get for your dollar].)
Confession: I just looked across the room and on my nightstand is a Ruger P90 with a laser grip. It isn't going to be replaced by an H&K or anything else. Now I can go and sleep peacefully knowing by conscience is clear and if the SHTF, the Ruger will never fail me. (OK, it might hit the lung when I was aiming for the heart, but I have no doubt that I'll get a second shot.)
