I'm looking at different carry guns and rigs. I have a Springfield XD 40 ca. 4" barrel. It just seems a little too big for concealed carry but I love the gun.
I'm leaning toward IWB carry rig, but I'm wondering what set ups all of you that carry a lot have. I'm also curious about if anyone out in public has ever notice that you're carrying and freaked out!
My wife thinks if I start to carry that I'm some sort of gun nut. Maybe she's right. I'm not being threatened by anyone, nor do I live in a dangerous area. She loves to shoot, but doesn't think it's necessary to carry at any time. Have any of you had this problem? I already have a carry permit, just thought I might want to use it someday.

fortygunner, I have an XD-40 also. Great gun, but I found others to be better for carry also. I can more easily conceal a 1911 than the XD because of the slim profile. Here is a link to a couple of my carry rigs. The Versa Max 2 IWB holster is very high quality and spreads the weight of the gun out. The design is such that the loops are not over the top of the gun keeping everything closer to your body. handgunforum.proboards3.com/index.cgi?board=detail&action=display&n=1&thread=2159As far as the wife thing... I have gone through that too. I explained it to her this way. 1. It is my duty to protect myself and my family. 2. Never think "it can't happen here or to me". It can and it does. 3. When the State you live in provides for CHL, and you have one, you should carry. That is what makes things safer. Not everyone will carry, but the bad guys don't know who does and who doesn't. Somebody has got to carry or the law and the benefits of that law are useless. Don't get me wrong, my wife still thinks I'm a "gun nut" , but she understands why I do what I do. I too live in a very, very low crime rate area. A few years ago, a gas station attendant a few miles from my house was murdered behind the counter by a punk with a gun. Within the past month, the local gun shop had a brick thrown through their window and the dirtbags made off with about 6 handguns in the darkness. The previous week, my security system was activated in the middle of the day. The alarm company checked it out after the police left and are not able to rule out an attempted break in. The world is full of ill intentioned people and they will not harm my family or myself, if I can help it. The harsh reality is, the police can not protect us from an immediate threat. Too many people think they can. Most of the time, they just fill out the report after the crime is committed.

Those are nice looking rigs! I was thinking also about a 1911. Other guys I know that carry told me the same thing.
I loved how you explained to your wife why you carry.
It's funny...we have been married for 25 years and whenever we go out to eat or something she knows that I will want to be positioned so that I can see the entrance. Even if they want to seat me with my back to the door, my wife will say "no I'll sit on that side". without me saying a thing. She knows that I do that so that I can see any trouble coming, but we have both laughed about what I could do about it anyway if some guy came in with a gun. You would think she would understand a little more. She also may just have to get use to it.
Thanks for the reply!

While my wife doesn't mind at all (and most of the time doesn't even notice I'm carrying), she still thinks it's unneccesary. The times we head out at night, or into the city she sees as reasonable, but when we're out at the local supermarket, not so much.
It turns out that she's been right every time so far. And that's a good thing, I hope she continues to be right. ;D Should she ever be wrong however, I'll be prepared.
The funny thing is, it was in large part due to her suggestion that I even applied for the carry permit (as opposed to a simple hunting/target shooting permit). Her point then was that there is no reason that I should not be able to carry should the need arise. Smart girl...

Interesting, MLB, how your wife's position on concealed carry seems to mirror how my wife feels on the subject. I also got my carry licence, at her urging, because it was the only way to legally carry on your person and in your vehicle. There is some arcane stuff in Texas about being a traveler, but for a 10 p.m. trip to Wal-Mart, you better have your permit. She kinda forgot about the whole thing after a while. Then one night we were having dinner out and the subject of guns came up. I told her there were probably other diners in the restaurant who were carrying. She didn't seem to like that idea much. Guess it's only OK for me! I was carrying at the time, but did not say anything about it, I never do. Once we were heading into a restaurant while traveling and she said, "Got your phone?" "Yes, I said, Why?" "What if there's trouble?" she says. (Meaning there might be a family emergency and someone would need to contact us.)?? "You know I don't call 911," I said. Without hesitation, she said, "Got your gun?" (Hate to admit it, but I had the cell phone in my pocket but left the pistol in the truck console!) I think she also may feel it's not needed near home on routine stuff, except maybe an after dark trip to an ATM. I don't agree.

What I was told was that in Texas if you didn't have the permit, you could only carry going directly to the range and returning from the range. They also told me that the gun and ammo needed to be in separate compartments and the gun not loaded. Seemed like a pain in the butt, so I got the license.
