Some weeks ago I commented on this forum that revolvers had never appealed to me. I was told by Xavierbreath that the bug may bite someday -- and maybe it has. I have developed a hankering to buy a Navy Colt percussion revolver, black powder, either the 1851 or 1861 model.
Here's the question: Anyone know of a good replica manufacturer for a guy on a budget? I don't want to spend more than a couple of hundred for this pistol. I know Uberti, Navy Arms, and Cimmarron are a couple of manufacturers.
Any recommendations?

Callahan; A company called " Dixie Gun Works" manufactures the black powder guns, and it is a surprising coinsidence that they are a Georgia based firm. I do not have their web address, but you can do a seach. Cabelos also has a selection of the black powder guns, and one needs no FFL to purchase them through the mail.

Callahan; I went to the Dixie Gun Works website, and they not only have the replica copies, they also have the original antiuque guns as well. It was very difficult for me to leave. www.dixiegun.com/

Looks like a good place. They have their own pistols Dixie brand plus Navy Arms and Uberti. Now if I could get someone to tell me which of those three... Dixie looks pretty good.
I just think it would be a hoot to fire a black powder pistol. I hear they compare favorably in accuracy to modern pistols. You get a bit extra smoke, sparks, and a flame or two!
Funny thing is the 1851 and 1861 Navy were regarded as the concealable weapons of their day. Wild Bill Hickok carried an 1851 Colt Navy...
Wonder if I shud order the kit with the US or CSA belt buckle. Any suggestions? ;D

I may have to watch Clint Eastwood in "Outlaw Josey Wales" again, where he tells the Union soldier, "Well, are you gonna pull them Colts or whistle Dixie?"
Gotta love it...

Callahan; Dixie has been in the black powder pistol business for quite some time; I'm more into centerfires, but would not mind having one of the black powder conversions. The Outlaw Josie Wales is a masterpiece, with some of the greatest scenes ever filmed for the westerns. I like the trading post, where he did the double road agent spin. Another great scene was the horseback fight with the Comancheros, " Get ready little lady, hell is coming to Breakfast". ;D

Another alternative that nobody has yet mentioned is the Guns-N-Stuff catalog. They have various cool reproduction revolvers in both steel and brass frames, with authentic-type color case-hardened parts etc. The manufacturers I saw there were Traditions (which I have seen examples of; some of their stuff is just beautiful) and E.M.F. (which I have not yet seen except in pictures). Prices range from $128 for a brass frame .44 1851 Navy to $292 for a replica of 1873 Colt SAA .44 w/7-1/2" bbl. There's a nice replica 1847 Walker .44 w/9" bbl. for $255.95....These guys can also be found on the web at www.gunsnstuff.net, so if you're still shopping, here's more choices to make your head spin....
