I got a new Springfield XD-40 last night, the 4" Service Model (XD9109) with the Trijicon Night Sights. Man oh man. ;D I immediately bought some ammo and used the range there at the gunshop to try out my new baby. I put a box of 100 PMC FMJ range ammo through it and 36 rounds of PMC Starfire JHP's. No FTE's or FTF's, everything worked fine. That .40 caliber is a nasty (effective) little round, isn't it. I fired most at 7 yards, a few at 10 yards, and a few at 15 yards. It will take me some time to get used to the trigger pull, but I think I will like it fine. I had never used the Trijicon sites before and so that will take a little time too. It's too soon to judge accuracy of the XD since it was mostly me getting a feel for things, but I still got everything in the red at 7 yards. I got home and sat down to clean. Did the easy field strip. And I noticed more wear marks on the barrel than I would have anticipated. The most noticeable was the rub marks from the slide on top of the barrel block (the part that is exposed). The black/blue finish was rubbed off in a couple of streaks. Also some ring marks on the barrel itself where it is supported near the muzzel end. I think this is normal, but I will check on the XD Forum. All in all I'm very happy with it. Below is not my picture, but I felt I needed to show something.

Nice pistol, Ricochet.
If someone wants to buy a .45 GAP right now, they have the choices of a Glock, of course, and Springfield XD. I would go with the Springfield.
Better looking, to me, just as reliable, more safety features and about $100 less money. Do they offer a drop-in .357 barrel in it?

Congrats on the XD!! Callahan, conversion bbls are available, just not from Springfield. I contacted Springfield about conversion bbls for the .40, they referred me to bartso. BarSto will have conversions for it ready to ship in December. www.barsto.com/ It is listed in the "new products" hyperlink above the thumbnails of the manufacturers. I also found some by EFK FireDragon for $145 on xdgear webpage: www.xd-gear.com/products.php?cat=8they have conversions for .40 to 9mm, .40 to .357sig Other sites have the firedragon bbls, but xd gear has many of the other goodies as well...grips, night sights, lights, holsters, springs, etc for the xds. Happy shooting

Thanks, 5ontarget. I'm interested in finding a .357 SiG barrel for my .40 S&W Sig P239. Will check that site.
Sig Wants $220 for their barrels.

Callahan, BarSto will run around $200 for a bbl, not much savings there. Fire Dragon www.rb-treasures.com/product.htmlor www.efkfiredragon.com/will run about $140-145 for standard, and 160-180 for ported. I don't know for sure if they'll have what your looking for, but it doesn't cost anything to look, right? for an extra $25 they'll put threads on it for you... For whatever you'd what threads on the end of your barrel for

That wear is normal. I had the same on my XD 9mm. That pistol is a wonderful shooter -- congrats.

Nice handgun Ricochet! I shot one in 9mm at the range and liked the way it felt. It was (partly) for my wife and she prefered the Glock so I went that way. However I believe the XD is a great choice.

Thanks guys. I sold my .380 Beretta Model 1934 to get this XD-40. Now I have my Browning BDA .380 on consignment. When I sell it, I may venture into the 1911 realm.

Careful, if you venture into the 1911 real you may never return. They are addictive!!!

... , but I still got everything in the red at 7 yards. Hey Ricochet, since most places have black targets, I guess I know where you bought it. Actually, I really like their big red double targets. I have the XD-9, with the night sights as well, and that was what I borrowed when I took the CHL exam. I measured my trigger pull and found it to be 6.75 lbs, which is a might bit on the high side. In fact it is the highest of anything I own with the exception of a little DAO P32. When I first shot it, the borrowed one, it was right after shooting a Glock, and I was impressed. It just felt better shooting it than the Glock.

Yep, TMan. Bullet Trap. They had the 9mm XD in the Bi-Tone (SS Slide) which tempted me, but I went with the .40 anyway.
I could have shopped around and gotten a little better deal, but I wanted the night sights and I'm not one to quibble over $25 when I see something I want. ;D

I have to confess. I went back to my local gunshop on Memorial Day and picked up an XD-9 Subcompact Bi-Tone (SS Slide) to go with my XD-40. It's a great little shooter. Shot 50 rounds of WWB through it. Surprisingly accurate considering the shorter barrel. ;D

congrats....again. Sounds like you got a little XD fever. If you're not careful, you may get some of us a little jealous with all your new acquisitions. They sure are fun guns to shoot. I've been considering the subcompact XD as well. I haven't decided which though, the .40 or 9mm. Does your subcompact have the night sights as well? I've not seen or shot the subcompact with night sights and I'm wondering how much they's help or if they'd be needed at all. I can see both sides of the arguements: 1. with such a short sight radius (4") most instances will be point and shoot. 2. with such a short sight radius, take every advantage available.

My XD-9 Subcompact has the standard factory "three white dot" sights. That was what was available there under the glass. I also got a nice little magazine floorplate extension that provides just the right support for my pinky. This is a sweet little pistol. When I went in and found that my Browning BDA .380 had sold for my asking price of $399, I couldn't resist getting the XD-9 Subcompact right there on the spot. My urge for a 1911 will have to wait . . . says my wife. ;D
