It's a good idea to get it in a rest if you can. At least get another shooter to put a set downrange to make sure it's the gun.
When I first got it, I thought my little PPK/S was way off until I had a pal of mine put a 3in grouping at 7 yd his first time with it.

I talked with a gunsmith and he thought I should do a trigger job and reduce the pull to 3.5 or4 and try shooting it again to see what happens. I think I will take his advice.

uhhomit; The lighter trigger stroke will help prevent you from pulling down on the muzzle during primer contact. I prefer my triggers to be very smooth, if not light, and both on guns that I use mostly for target. For some newer handguns, I have carried a Millet bench rest to test the gun's accuracy; These are fairly inexpensive, and will save a few dollars on stray hits, until you get accustomed to the pistol.

A person who was once a friend of mine owned a Sig (I have forgotten which model). He constantly told me that it was a waste of money because he could bearly hit paper with it. I agreed, because I just didn't like Sigs at the time.
One day we found ourselves on the range, him with his Sig, me with my Glock. After watching him put shots into the dirt for about ten minutes, I asked if I could put a few rounds through his inaccurate Sig. He agreed, and I shot one of the best groups I have ever shot with a pistol.
Over the next year or so, he spent a great deal of time on the range trying to make his Sig do what I had made it do. He was unsuccessful.
Some shooters just don't mesh with some firearms...
