I've noticed my P99 "catching" a bit lately when working the slide. It seems that the recoil spring is hanging up on the frame. No problems at the range, but the slide should operate smoothly regardless.
The problem is due to the plastic recoil rod I think. The recoil spring is captive on the rod for this model, and for ease of assembly (I believe) the plastic rod is actually two pieces. This creates a hinge of sorts about a third of the way from the end of the rod.
When the spring is compressed a bit to hold the barrel in the slide, the rod and spring assembly bows enough to hang up on the frame I think.
I've been searching for a metal guide rod for a while with no luck. As a compromise, I ordered a "recoil reducer" from Sprinco that incorporates a stainless steel guide rod into the design. The recoil reducing part is a pair of progressive springs as opposed to a single one.
I don't feel the need for a recoil reducer, and the $70 is a bit steep too, but when it comes in, I'll take it for a spin and post a review.

The Sprinco Recoil Reducer came in a couple of days ago, and last night I had the chance to try it out. As I described above, the stock recoil rod is plastic and flexes a bit when compressed. After a bit more thought, when the slide is on the frame, it might straighten out, but it doesn't sit right with me regardless. The before and after pics are below: The rod itself is well made, highly polished stainless steel, and chrome moly spring stock. Probably not $70 worth, but nice nonetheless. ;D The range report was a bit less satisfying though. This spring setup feels significantly stiffer than stock (which cycles flawlessly). My plain old WWB often failed to feed, due to short cycling IMHO. I'm going to contact Sprinco to see if they sent me the "Cor-Bon" (stiffer spring) version by mistake. As far as reducing recoil, the P99 kicks a bit. It's a light gun. While it may be a bit lighter, I didn't notice a big difference.
