Welcome to the Forum loki; We have several members who have owned a P-89 long enough to give you some good advice. Congradulations on your new pistol.

I bought one for my son and shot it a few times. They are good, rugged handguns.

thnx, haven't shot it yet but will let you all know what i think about it when i do! does anyone know if ruger p89 is easy to breakdown or field strip? thnx yeah it's pretty simple. 1. engage safety 2. remove magazine 3. open and lock slide 4. push down the ejector until it locks forward 5. close the slide 6. on the right side of the gun (with the muzzle away from you) the end of the slide release lever protrudes a bit. pull the slide back only a little and push that slide release lever nubbin all in. pull the slide release lever out and the slide is free to be removed. 7. figure the rest out. 8. i hope that is helpful 9. the manual has pictures in it 10. good times will ensue deef

Welcome to the forum!! Rugers make some nice guns. I think for the money, Rugers are some of the best values going for new guns. As the saying goes, a good bang for the buck The P89 special edition was the first handgun I bought, followed by some others pretty quickly. I got the fever pretty bad after that. The P89 is a good gun, typical Ruger stuff. Very durable, very reliable. I've never had a missfire or miss/fail to feed with it. It will shoot all kinds of ammo without problems, it shoots all day without any problems. I can't remember how many rounds I've shot through it now. I don't shoot it as often as I used to...mainly because I have other stuff to shoot. (and it's too cold for me to shoot much outside, no close indoor ranges) The gun is not a target pistol, but accuracy is very reasonable. Most days it probably shoots better than I do. On my pistol, the DA trigger pull was horrendously terrible, I think it would take a hydraulic press to pull the trigger...now it has broken in some and is probably just bad now. The pull in SA is pretty good now too. Not 1911 good, but pretty good. Some people like it others don't...it works well for me. happy & safe shooting

Okay, I don't have a P89, but I do have its bigger brother the P90. I have put more rounds through it than any of my other guns. Consequently, it has gotten a little loose. The slide to frame fit has about .006" of play. However, it hasn't seemed to effect the accuracy. After a couple thousand rounds, I've measured the SA trigger pull and found it to be at 3.5lbs, and a very clean break.
The only thing I didn't like about it was the grips, and I replace those with Hogue grips.
The Ruger is not my CCW, it is my bedside gun. In all the rounds, I never had a single failure of any type. I would say that it is my favorite, but other members of this forum that know some of my handguns would tar and feather me, or have me commited. ;D
I am a big Ruger fan, and I think the more you shoot your P89, the more you will appreciate it. She may not be the prettiest girl at the dance, but she wasn't the most expensive either, and she will always be faithful to you - just treat her right.

"Close enough for government work"
I've had two Rugers and after listening others mock them as "accurate enough" I moved on to Glocks and Sigs.
I recently took my 40S&W out of the glove box with stock sights and was able to reliably get 10 yard 4" 10 round groups with it, just like a Sig.
All it takes is practice.
