Speaking of Sigs...I saw on another forum a "debate" over preferrences between the 228 and 229. Apparently the 229 has a "machined" slide whereas the 228 has a "stamped" slide. What is the difference and is there a benefit one way or the other?

The "Machined Slide" is manufactured from a solid bar of forged stainless steel, and designed primarily for the use with the high pressures of the .40 S&W cartridge. The Steel Stamped sides of the 228 consisted of very strong sheet steel which is formed in the shape of a slide which wraps around a removable solid steel forged breech block. One note I have to add about the steel stampings from Sig Sauer; I have three of these pistols in the P- 220, two in .45 acp, and one in 38 Super. These are very strong slides, and hard to believe that steel stampings can be this solid. Sig Sauer gave a new meaning to steel stampings with these pistols.

That's awesome, thanks for the good info... Why would Sig make slides using two different techniques? And is the the only difference between the 228 and 229?

The stainless slides began their use with the P-229 and the heavier and more powerful cartridge of the .40 S&W, and later for the 357 sig cartridge, as opposed to the 228 and it's 9mm chambering. In appearance, the 228 and 229 seem to share the same frame but the 229 is actually strengthened in areas, like the frame rails, to provide better support for a more powerful cartridge chamber. With the Sigs that chamber the .40 S&W or the 357 sig, these pistols will also feature the stainless slides; Those pistols include the P-226, P-229, and P-239. The steel stamped slides and alloy frames are produced in the German plant, while the stainless slides are manufactured in the U. S. under Sigarms.

See? I knew there had to be a reason...that's crazy that you knew all that, I'm amazed. So the 228 is only available in 9mm then and therefore doesn't need the more heavyduty machined slide? (although I noted that you said the stamped slided by Sig are amazingly durable in their own right)
