I'm a housepainter and the homeowner we are currently painting for has three handguns that belonged to her late husband. She showed them to me today and wondering if I could get some info on them and estimated values as well. If this isn't the forum for this sort of post I'd also appreciate being pointed in the right direction... 1) Astra .25cal 7 shot Fire Cat auto #89**** (I'm told he used this pistol to defend his store in Detroit during the '68 riots) 2) INA (Brazil) .38 special 5 shot Tiger revolver #02#### 3) Smith & Wesson .38 special 5 shot #36 chiefs special #J27***
Any info or ideas on values would be greatly appreciated...btw, the Astra has some pitting on the blueing, the INA is ok but not great, and the S&W appears to be in excellent condition. (sorry I do not know what the offical firearm condition rating system is)

The Astra is manufactured in Spain from a long line of firearm makers, and they hold their value quite well. The Firecat in 6.35mm ( .25 cal ), which was manufactured up until 1966 is listed with Gun List as having a value of $300 for excellent, $200 for Very Good, and $125 for good. This pistol is also known as the Astra 200. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
The S&W Model 36 will fetch more if it has adjustable rear sights, because only a limited number of those were manufactured. These are value appraised at $450 in excellent condition, according to the Gun List Standard Catalog of Firearms. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I had someone ask me of the I.N.A. revolver a few years ago; These guns were manufactured in outdated machine shops, primarily for the Brazilian Army, by Industria Nacional de Armas of Sao Paulo. You might find their engraved trademark of a springing jaguar on the left side of the frame. Sorry to say; At this time I do not have any information regarding the current value of the I.N.A. Revolvers.

That's great info DA, thanks. Thanks also for the prompt response. I'll have to check for the adjustable sights on the S&W. I don't know if it's standard on that model or not, but it does have a snub barrel. What would the value be w/o the adjustable sights? Thanks again.
Edited to add: From the book that I have the S&W seems to be the Model 36, blued, 2in barrel, wood grips. Stil not sure about the sights though, I'll have to take a closer look at work tomorrow.

Flamdrags; The ones with the adujustable rears are the Target Models and will be stamped with 36 on the inside of the yoke; These were manufactured from 1957 to 1965. The value will fluctuate up to $400. because some are more rare than others. If I were to bargain for one, the price would be much lower.

DA...
I took another look at the Model 36 S&W today at work and no, it does not have the adjustable rear sight, there's no rear sight at all actually (although from the pictures I've seen this appears normal). I have the serial number from the gun, is it possible to find out a date of manufacture? Thanks again.

Flamdrags; With it not being the target model, we can narrow the search information to just the chiefs special. This also brings the price down to an average estimated worth of $325. for New In Box condition. I can track the year of production from the serial number and a model number prefix ( example : 36-2 on the inside of the frame at the yoke ). For the serial number, substitute xxx for the last three digits for privacy.

Hmm...ok...well maybe I don't have the info that I think I have, or that I need. I have what she gave me off of the registration cert. J27### Is that even enough numbers to be a serial number? Don't go to any trouble to find anymore out; you've been an enormous help already. Thanks again.

Flamdrags; This S&W was manufactured between 1975 and 1976, falling between the serial number range of J250001 thru J370000. The J prefix serial numbers began in 1969 in the Model 36-1, with J1.
