Here is one of my Russian military Makarov's with a set of my laminated hardwood grips. It is Amboyna Burl laminated on a set of original grips. www.topgunsupply.com

Interesting technique. What were the original grips made out of?
I've been looking for grips for my Interarms PPK/s unsuccessfully for a long time. They are available for the Walther PPK/s, but clearly state that they won't work on the frenchy model. It is a .22LR version, and was the reason I switched to CCI mini-mag ammo. I used to get one or two jams per magazine, and now I can easily shoot 200 rounds without cleaning and no jams. I seldom shoot it, but the plastic grips are kind of crappy looking.

The redstar grips are made of bakelite. It is nice to work with and sands well. The newer production Russian "Baikal" grips as well as the thumb rest import grips are plastic. I have made grips from these as well, but the plastic melt as you sand it on the belt sander and it doesn't hold its form as well as the bakelite.
I must give credit where credit is due. I got the idea from Scott Sensing of Sensing Grips. He has been very helpful to me through my start up.

TMan, you shoud try making a set. With a dremmel, sanding paper and plenty of patience, you can have a custom set of grips for the cost of the wood. It was a lot of fun making mine.

MLB, I have no artistic talent. I'm closer to autistic than I am artistic. I'm also a bit of a perfectionist, so I know I'd never be satisfied with anything I did myself. I know me - lived with me all my life. It is the cross I have to bare.

TA-
I have found that a good rasp works pretty well on the plastics. For fast removal, an air file works well, but can get clogged pretty quickly. A stiff brush usually cleans them out pretty easily. Did you use an epoxy or something else to bond the wood to plastic?

I have tried a few different epoxy glues. JB Weld didn't bond very well to the plastic. Devcon seems much better. The bakelite grips seem to be even better for bonding. I haven't had any come loose yet, but I am always looking for the best.
