somery; Welcome to our handgun forum. The S&W 500 is a bigun for sure, but for those who don't reload their own cases, ammunition is kind of pricey. The muzzle brake seems to work on this gun, from what I've heard many say about it's recoil.

Somery, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one intrigued by this monster. ;D You mentioned that you lived in Texas. I don't know where you are, but I'm in the DFW Metroplex. I was in Lewisville last week at Sportsman's Warehouse. They have several of the S&W 500 including the one that I was handling, which was the one from the Performance Center.
I've always thought I was rather sensitive to recoil, but I've found out recently that it is the noise that bothers me most of all. I've gone to wearing foam earplugs in addition to my muffs. I've gradually been increasing the caliber of what I shoot. I'm up to .44 Magnum with a recoil energy of 10 out of the S&W 629.
I've talked to several people that have shot the S&W 500 and they were all very big people. One was a younger fellow that had spent 8 years in the Marine Corps. He shot 2 rounds and said that was enough for him.
In addition to the muzzle flip and the gun pushing back into your hand, there is also a twisting effect that comes from the bullet twisting its way through the rifling.
I've been reading about the new S&W 460 XVR. In addition to the .460 round it will also shoot the 454 Casull and 45 Long Colt. If you buy the 500 and don't like it you are stuck. If you buy the 460, and don't like shooting the 460 or 454 Casull, you can always shoot the 45 Long Colt, which should be like shooting a 22LR.
I'm not going to be the first kid on the block with the .460, but it may find its way into my harem next year. ;D

I just went to S&W, for their factory tour, and to the shooting sports center.
I'm 5'6, 139lbs.
The first shot, with a 500 8 3/8" was a 330gr lead RN. The most recoil I ever felt in a handgun! The next round was a 385gr JHP Corbon, which almost put me on my rear end ;D, and I understand, that there is a 450gr available.
This is one gun that I don't think I will be buying for target practice, any time in the near future!

I hate you. I'm 5'7" and 170 lbs, and it isn't muscle. Where's that South Beach Diet book? Oh there it is under the potatoe chips.

somery; I do beg for everyone to compress their photo images to where they will fit within the space of our message boards before posting them. I use the group area to compress my own photos before uploading them to my image provider. It would be a most welcomed addition to our forum to have more Handgun images posted; I think I speak for most when I say that we all look forward to any and all contributions.
