I have always maintained a firm belief that S&W Revolvers have offered good bargains in the new and pre-owned market place of Handguns. Because many of the previous Models have become discontinued, or changed, we are forced to pursue the pre-owned sources for these revolvers.
The other day I was looking through some production numbers of the Model 27 and found that the 4" barrel was only offered from 1979, with the 27-2, until 1992 with the 27-5. This spans a period between 1957 , with the introduction of the numbered model 27, until 1994 with the discontinuance of the Model 27.
In the year 2000 an order top Bangers Dist. was that of 100 revolvers in the Model number 27-7, with 4" inch barrels and eight shot cylinders; Another 100 was made in the 6 1/2 " Barrels. These for Bangers featured the frame mounted firing pins and MIM hammer and trigger. These revolvers wwas made through the S&W Performance Center.
I seriously doubt if the 27-7 for Bangers will be found at any bargain, but some of the Model 27-2 revolvers, with the steel triggers and Hammers, pinned barrels, recessed cylinder chambers, squared butts, and hammer mounted firing pins have a unique price attached to thier production numbers, without consideration taken into the four inch barrel length. These revolvers also come with factory wood presentation cases. Asking prices for these revolvers should be around $450 to $500 dollars in excellent condition. I expect these guns to increase in value within a short period of time, maybe before I finish this thread ;D.
