I'm new to this forum and just wanted opinions on the Sub-Compact Springfield Armory XD .40. I am a recently doned law officer recruit and I've been looking at different smaller weapons for a back up. Would this be a good choice?

Welcome to the Forum, xd40inga; I haven't heard anything negative on any of the XD pistols. As for the .40 S&W cartridge, I carry a compact Sig 239 in .40 S&W and find the 3.6" barrel to be very good in placing the 135 gr. Corbons on target in short order, as well as the 357 sig offerings. Are you currently carrying a full size XD as a duty weapon ?

Currently the force I work for issues Glock .45's for patrol officers, I'm not sure of the model number. I do own a sub-compact 9 mm but I want something with a little more knock down if I ever have to pull my back up plus my fiancee currently carries it as a personal defense weapon.

XD; I've fired Glock's version in the compact .45 acp, and it didn't feel much in recoil for me. Follow up shots came as fast as one could expect, unless going to a steel frame 1911. I would expect the XD compact to be very controllable in the .40 S&W, and not much different than the feel you have in the design of the Glock.

Would this be a good choice? Welcome, XD40INGA. I have some reservations about the subcompact. From what I hear, that XD-40 in the subcompact is going to be a handful to fire in .40 with that short grip. If you have large hands, you may be only able to get the second and third fingers wrapped around it. It also is kinda chunky with a lot of structure forward of the trigger guard. Tough to conceal. I don't think I'd want to fire it or try to conceal it. What are they getting for them in your area, $600?

I went this morning to a local gun shop that has an indoor range and shot the XD .40. I absolutly loved it so I purchased it. It was six and change before a law enforcement discount that got me down to about 5 and a half. Anyway, thanks for the feedback if you guys have any other insight just let me know.

That's expensive for the gun ...
The XD is a great gun. My only issue with the subcompact for CCW is that it isn't all that light (heavier than my Kimber) and it isn't all that narrow (wider than my Kimber).
I'm sure you will be happy with your purchase xd40inga.

I can't offer any opinions on the XD-40 because I never shot it. I do own an XD-9, and I've never been able to understand why I shoot it so well. It has night sights so I don't pick up the front sight as well, and the trigger is much heavier than the one on my Glock G34, but I shoot much better with the XD.
Sounds like you have a good dealer that gives you a very good LEO discount. My dealer just got a big Kimber contract, but only makes $5 per gun, but feels like they are doing something for the community.
I have varied opinions on what to pay for a weapon. I don't always buy from the lowest priced dealer. Having a good relationship with the dealer is more important to me than the price (unless it is for a $2K plus gun of course).

Walk-in price for the XD-40 at the biggest gun store in Houston is $419. That's for the standard-sized pistola.

XD; I noticed from your handle that you are in Ga. I don't know how competitive gun prices are in your local area, or how dealers mark up their guns. If you want; I can give you some numbers and names to some dealers here just to be safe. I also have the name of a dealer in Newnan I bought a Colt Rifle from; he bargained $150. off the asking price of a new gun. We also have a custom gunsmith in Palmetto, just off I-85 before you reach the Fairburn exit going into the south metro Atlanta area. There are many other highly noted pistolsmiths around the Newnan and Columbus area. The one in Palmetto is one I've done business with; I've been told he does excellent action jobs on the Glocks, among other things.

1st, welcome to the board. 2nd, I like the XD I have, (357sig service) I only have good things to say about it, except the finish on some XD's seems to wear fairly quickly. If you take reasonable care of your gun, you'll probbaly never have a problem. Take care of it like you would a blued gun, don't treat it like a tennifer finish (Glock). I shoot the gun well. Everyone that shoots mine, shoots it well almost immediately...unlike my kel-tec. 3rd, if the grip is too small, there are grip/pinky extensions, mag extensions/pads so you can use a full size mag in it. www.pistol-gear.com/products.php?cat=8&PHPSESSID=b289100974f39c485e89a5ad04a890f9

Lol ... I know the XD is suppoed to weigh less, and maybe it does, but it doesn't feel like it. I was just holding my sister's XD9sc in one hand and the Kimber UCII in the other and I still think the UCII is lighter. She even thinks so, though they are very close. I think my Kimber is supposed to be 27-28oz. I thought the XD was supposed to be 24 though ...

I purchased the pistol from a guy who actually bought his business from our current sherriff in Troup Co. so most of us in law enforcement in this area try to deal with him because he usually does us pretty well. The issue is we only have two actual places to purchase weapons here that aren't pawn shops and the "Other Place" , where my sister is floor manager, marks up about 25%, so I usually just don't shop them for firearms. Any, names of gunsmiths in the area that might help me out, though, would be greatly appreciated. My next personal purchase will most likely be a Bushmaster AR-15 and the lowest price I have found was on a used weapon at $875. The gun's in good shape but that's still a bit pricey for me. Anyway, thanks for the replies.

I'm a bit biased because I love my XD 40 service model.
I've shot the subcompact 40 and, although there was more felt recoil than the 4" service model, it wasn't very bad. The biggest drawback was the size and weight. It's chunky for a sub compact and it's heavier than most.
I ended up with a Kahr MK 9 for my subcompact. It is much smaller than the Springfield subcompact, but since its all metal, it is not much lighter. I can drop the MK 9 into a front pocket (as long as I cinch up my belt).
Stay safe, Ron
