Since you guys got me thinking about 1911's again, I know the one thing I haven't bought is a LongSlide version. Supposedly the extra inch (6") gives the advantage of a longer sight radius, and the gun is more accurate.
I know that Springfield Armory makes one, and I have thought about it in the past.
Does anyone own one, or has shot one, and does it shoot better than the 5" model?

TMan; The first time I saw a long slide 1911 was with the AMT Hardballer Long Slide 1911; One was also used in the Movie "The Terminator". I had an AMT Hardballer with the 5" barrel and inquired locally about obtaining the long slide/ barrel conversion but couldn't make the right connection. I doubt if it would have actually been very practical.

One other think; I had heard complaints about the longer slide not wanting to cycle as well with standard .45 acp ball.

Well, with the longer slide you have more surface to surface friction. Might have to go to a lighter spring or light weight oil.
(Speaking of light weight oil the Element uses 5W20, and it is like pouring in water.)
I'm still in awe of how well we shoot the 460XVR, and I'm thinking we would shoot a longslide 1911 better. We don't even come close with our current pistols.

TMan; Going to a weaker spring, with the longer slide, creates the potential of failing to go into battery after using much of it's energy to strip the cartridge from the magazine and chamber the cartridge. This is one of the problems with the longer slide. Going to a more powerful load seems to be one solution, or another cartridge. The 460 Rowland or 38 Casull might be much better for the Long Slide.

I'm not going to go to another caliber. My garage is starting to look like an ammo dump. So if I want to stick with 45 ACP, perhaps the Longslide is a bad idea?
I know me: if I have trouble with it, I'll try to fix it my self, and if I'm not successful it will go into storage for my heirs to deal with. ;D After the hard time my eldest son gave me when he was growing up, it would be nice to pay him back after I'm gone.

I'm supposed to put 5W20 in my Exploder as well. I haven't been able to find it easily, although I haven't tried very hard. The 5W30 may give me infantesimally lower gas milage, but when you're only getting 16-17mpg, it won't drive me broke any faster. Besides, in the heat of summer, that stuff must get awfully thin.

TMan; You can go with the Long slide, using a lighter bullet and hotter load, but I really don't think you'll be satisfied with it over that of a standard five inch 1911. The 460 Rowland and the 38 Casull, both take 30 lb. recoil springs. I think the 38 Casull 1911 is a Long Slide.
