Would a pistol, using a manual safety with a double action/ single action trigger be much safer than one with the decocker such as the Sigs ?

I don't think it is so much a matter of one being more safe than another one. If you are going to have a need to decock, than the lever is nice, but my most expensive Sig doesn't have one, and I really don't miss it.

I think it is a matter of personal preference. I have a little of each, a gun with a decocker, one with no manual safety lever, one that is DAO, and one that has the more traditional safety lever.
I agree with Tman, I don't think one is inherently more safe than another. If one were significantly better than the other, you'd see most gun manufacturers switching to whatever that was. As you know, there is a huge variety out there. The greatest safety is the one between your ears.
FWIW, for carry I like the my Springfield XD which has no safeties to switch, just a grip and trigger safety, or my Kel-Tec which is DAO. It just takes practice with whichever you choose. I'm not very good at adapting to the differing pulls with a SA/DA pistol. I prefer to have the trigger pull the same each time I pull the trigger.

The reason I posed this question is in regards to possibly looking at a variation of the 1911 as my choice; for alot of reasons.

I had a guy refer to a S&W 4506 as a "1911 style pistol", which I didn't quite understand. Aside from cosmetic similarities and chambering, I wouldn't have connected the two. If you prefer a DA pull and a manual safety though, this may be an option.

One da trigger I've been thinking of is the para ordinance Lda. Having a da action trigger, I was also wondering if the thumb safety is also a functional part of it's design.
