I just saw an ad on TV today for "World Trade Center", the movie. www.WTCmovie.com. My first reaction is disgust that someone is profiting from this, and others are going to go watch it to be entertained for an afternoon. Perhaps that's just a knee-jerk reaction though. What do you think? The web site is exceptionally well done.

After the first passenger jet hit the World Trade Center I was watching the events unfold on the television. I was not working on that unforgettable morning and spent the rest of the day, and days following, watching the people of New York. There are days in my life that I will never forget where I was at and what I was doing; one is the day John F. Kennedy was shot and the terrible day of September 11. Many thoughts and words were expressed throughout the nation but none impacted home as much as those from ground zero. During a brief moment one could not help but realize that this tragedy would one day be depicted on film. From the very start, news agencies were scrambling to capture images and interviews at ground zero. The unfair use of 911, as a means of profit, goes far beyond the boundaries for any film maker, news agency, or publishing company.

The media outlets that brought images and stories of 9/11 into our homes were making a profit from doing so. IMO, the WTC movie fits into a similar category. Besides, is it also wrong for people to make war movies? There are a lot of movies about the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Holocaust, and even the execution of Jesus.
If it's merely a question of timing or historical context, then the answer can only be a matter of opinion. My opinion is that movies don't matter. All successful businesses have to target a consumer, and the people making this movie simply targeted a very wide range of comsumers by appealing to numerous emotions that we are all still experiencing to an extent. It didn't take a genius to figure out that this type of movie might make $$$, and I don't think it took a monster to press the red button.

While I don't like the idea of people profiting from others misfortunes (yes I know it happens all the time.), I also think it is good to revisit the difficult times occasionally. For example, I almost always stop and watch documentaries on various wars, and on 9/11 as well. So I guess I have mixed feeling on the whole deal. I hope it is well done, and not hyper done.
