I've never owned a handgun before, but I have the opportunity to buy a Dan wesson 357 mag which I'm thinking of using for deer hunting instead of my slug gun, this is an older gun with most likely an 8" barrel (maybe longer). It's in the original box, (from the looks of the box it's probably 30 years old or older) I don't knowanything about these guns and can I mount a scope on this gun, the guy's asking 300$ is that too much? or will I make out. If it's a good hunting Revolver let me know, hows the accuracy on these guns and what's there reputation? It's a Dan weesson so I imagine at sometime he merged with smith and came up with the smith and wesson name, any help would be appreciated. when I seen this gun I could tell it's probably only had less than a box of shells fired out of it (if that) there's no powder burns on the cylinder or anything, also it's blued with black grips if anybody here can help me out please e-mail me at jtslagle@windstream.net (dan wesson model m-12)

Welcome to the Forum Jeff. From what I've read and heard, Dan Wesson Firearms was started by the grandson of Daniel Wesson of S&W. Although Dan Wesson shares the same name of "Wesson", the two companies share in nothing else. Buying a used firearm, especially a hunting grade revolver in the range of $300., one would not be hard pressed in finding a more potent caliber in the Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum. The Ruger has provided hunting grade revolvers for some time and they are very strong. You will not have much trouble seeking customer service with the Rugers either. I bought a used stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk for $300, for which I probably gave the seller more than I should have. Stainless will be more friendly for the environment of hunting than that of blued revolvers. If you get a scratch on stainless, you simply polish it off. Stainless will not suffer from surface rust as that of blued carbon steel revolvers. I would let the Dan Wesson pass, in favor of a stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum.
