For finding certain guns, the method which has worked on my behalf has been that of chance and patience. Alot of things happens between wanting a certain piece and actually acquiring it.
I have been wanting a blue four inch S&W Model 29 for a very long time, and one of these days I'm going to run up on the right one when I least expect it. Since wanting one I have bought many other handguns, including other S&W revolvers, for more than I would expect to pay for a 29. I kind of feel as long as I want one I will have something to pull me toward browsing the used gun counters. Problem with browsing is I have sometimes found guns which I had wanted at one time or another but had to be reminded.
My quest for the blue four inch 29 is one which has become my answer to completing the guns I always wanted and one which I tell everyone I do not have, rather than those I do have. In the meantime, I will avoid any quick solutions to ending my quest and quietly wait with patience until a certain one, at a certain price, warrants my attention.
Until then, I have other things to buy for some of the guns I already own.

That Royal Blued 4" Python is still on my "someday" list. Another is a Walther P5 compact, neither of which looks as if they will find me soon. Each would run considerably over $1000, which at this point in my life has more practical applications.
There are plenty of handguns that I'm interested in, but not enough to own. Seems to me that most new handgun designs are plastic, which just doesn't interest me lately. Maybe a good looking Makarov will find me this year though.

Everytime I look at the new counters I see prices on revolvers which sends me to the used counters. Finding thousand dollar pieces in the new counters is quite common, and it's been this way for some time now. As the new gun prices go up, the used gun prices on certain pieces are bound to go up. It currently costs too much money to produce guns like the Python, in order for the manufacturer to satisfy enough profit demands. Everything is low cost high profit. Things were real simple when Colt and S&W dominated the marketplace; they couldn't make enough guns. I remember when I could walk into a gun dealer shop and see counters upon counters of brand new blue steel S&W and Colt revolvers. Being overwhelmed was part of the pleasure in visiting gun store dealers back then. The older revolvers are fast becoming a lost art in American Industry.

At the shop/range that I frequent, there are about 2 cases of glocks, 1/2case of springfield XD, 1 case of various 1911's kimber, springfield, wilson, colt, ria, and a case or two of cz and S&W semiautos. The only revolvers I see for sale are over in the used counter. Occasionally, they'll have a couple new taurus and s&w snubbies.

It is good that I don't have a big list because I'm "window poor". I got the windows in the back replaced to the tune of $22K, and the front and sides will be another $26K. I wish I'd known what they would cost - I wouldn't have retired. Also, I'm going to be making a couple of trips to India this year and I want to do some sightseeing. There is a lot of India that I haven't seen (wish I was going to China instead).
I've gotten to the point that I carry the Taurus in a pocket holster almost exclusively. It weighs 17oz and S&W has the 360PD (hammer) and 340 PD ("hammerless"), which weigh 12oz. However, I'm not sure I'd notice the 5oz difference, and I do like the Taurus's looks a lot more than the S&W's. Add to that that I can't decide if I want the 360 or 340.
I do know something I want to buy: Ruger 22/45 Hunter KP678HMKIII. However, that is for the satisfaction of knowing that I bought something that "Gun Tests" recommended not to buy.
I've also been considering the Desert Eagle in 44 Mag. I shot one once and it is a nice gun, but I'm not sure if I could get used to the trigger.
Another one that has my interest is the Ruger Alaskan 454/45 LC.
Currently there aren't any long guns that have my interest.
