For target and competition I use 9mm because it is cheaper. For carry I use 357SIG or .45ACP.

dogman; Some of my favorite cartridges are also chambered in some my favorite handguns. Where would the .357 magnum be, if not for S&W's Model 27 or Colt's Python ? Where would the .45 acp be, if not for the 1911 ? Where would alot of handguns be if not for these two cartridges ? The application of either of these two cartridges, by those of the military and law enforcement, goes without having to mention.
I don't think I would stand alone when I say that these two cartridges, and the handguns chambering them, would be among my top two favorite choices, both for shooting and self defense.

I don't hunt except for rabbits in the backyard with the pellet gun. They didn't contribute one dime towards all the landscaping and work and they run around like they own the place. They also scare the crap out of me on occasions.
Having watched the soaring ammo prices lately, I've gotten to the point that I only buy handguns chambered in 9mm. Bass Pro has WWB on sale for $8 a box, and I picked up 20 boxes yesterday. I find that I don't shoot the 17HMR rifles as much either because of the ammo prices. However, the last brick of 22LR that I bought came out to $10/box, but that is not for shooting in the Remington 597.
I don't believe the governments low inflation numbers. I went in yesterday to get a battery replaced in my watch. They had one just like it in a display case for $4700. I bought mine around 7 or 8 years ago for $2500. Of course the exchange rate between the Euro and the dollar isn't good.
So, I'm looking for cheaper ways to put holes in paper.

TA, I have never shot a 357SIG but it looks like a interesting cartridge. TMan, That's cheap. My distributer costs to me is $9 a box plus shipping and 17HMR is $9 a box plus Shipping. He just sent a new price list and wow what an increase. DoubleAction, What can you say wrong about the Python. Have several in my collection. Did you know that at one time Colorado HP issued 4 inch Pythons as duty guns.

Dogman, I complained to my dealer about the fact that the S&W 22A was $169 at Cabela's on sale, and her price was much higher. She looked at her cost and it was $174. She said that the big stores like Cabela's and Bass Pro shops can buy directly from the manufacturer and get a better price.
So watch for sales at the big guys. Currently I'm buying more ammo at sales than I am shooting so my garage has 3 cars, 1 motorcycle, 2 bicycles, a bunch of lawn equipment, and an ammo dump. ;D

TMan, I buy from a distributor that I have dealt with for years when I had the gun shop. I still buy ammo and components from him. I don't have the time to shoot as much as I would like but have a room in my house devoted to guns, reloading and other good things. I still do gunsmithing for local LEO's and and some consulting work.for courts.

I have a Sig P239 with both the .40 and 357 Sig barrels. I prefer to shoot with the 357 Sig even though it is a bit more expensive. (A "bit." Yeah, right.)
To me, the 357 recoil is similar to .40 in the 135-grain self defense loads by Federal. I feel the accuracy is superior to the .40, at least for me.
In rifles I like the .270 Winchester since it is an ideal round for Texas white-tails and I shoot it well. My rifle gives me one-inch groups at 100 yards in Federal Premium.
For special occasions, I bring out the Winchester Model 1886 in .45-90. I have to buy some black powder rounds for that some day, just for fun. I will probably regret it come cleanup time.
But, on a daily basis, I carry a Kel-Tec 3AT, so maybe my favorite round is .380.
I expect to be buying Kel-Tec's new PF-9 soon.

I expect to be buying Kel-Tec's new PF-9 soon. Callahan, have you found a dealer that has them? My dealer said that her distributor has them "allocated". She had better not get one and sell it to someone else while I'm out of the country. ;D SU-16's seem to be the only Kel-Tec's that are readily available.

TMan: The four Carter's Country stores in Houston now have them. They sell out very quickly as each shipment comes in, so you pretty much have to be there the day they arrive. I have not checked Gander Mountain.

Considering all the time I've spent shooting, the best times were plinking away with a .22cal rifle.
I'm not giving up the others though ;-)
