if you are refering to the .30 cal round used in the M1 carbine, then it is not close to the 30-30. The round for the M1 is much smaller then the 30-30. some compare it to a handgun round and not a rifle. I would say that it makes a good ranch gun, but i would not use it on anything larger than a coyote. is this the same round you refer too?

Hi NButler, yes.I have a 30-30 lever gun but want a semi-auto and wondered if the M1 .30 would be it.

Hi NButler, yes.I have a 30-30 lever gun but want a semi-auto and wondered if the M1 .30 would be it. I have always wanted an M1 carbine. When I did have the chance to shoot one, it seemed very accurate and the small recoil made follow-up shots easy. I found some stats on the round at this site www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/30m1.htmlIt says that the 110 gr bullet travels at 1975 fps. thats hotter than a handgun. but not has heavy of a bullet or as fast as the 30-30. there are probobly other members in this forum with more experience than myself. IMHO, i prefer to use the SKS for the same role. the SKS is cheaper, more reliable and ammo is dirt cheap (with a large variety of HP,FMJ,SP etc) That is my personal opinion. I would like a m1 carbine because of its historical signifigance. Others prefer something like a ruger mini-30 or mini-14
