Are the two rounds close and how do they compare to a .308 up to 200 yds? Thanks for any info.

I am not much of a rifle shooter but I can read and have some references. The 7.62x39mm has a muzzle velocity of ~2400 fps in bullets of about 125 grains and energy around 1500 ft/lbs. A similar .270 of ~125 grains would have a velocity of 3200 fps and energy of about 2600 ft/lbs. A .308 would be very similar to the .270. The 7.62x39mm is classed as a cartridge roughly equal in power to the 30-30 while the .270 and .308 approach the 30-06.

it is worth noting that the .270 is available in many bullet configurations. 122gr HP/FMJ or 154gr SP for the 7.62X39 is common. but you can get .270's in 90, 130, 140, 150 and other grains. most hunting 7.62X39 rounds will be either HP, SP or FMJ. .270's have many choices, (SP, HP, Accubond, NBT, silvertip, BTSP etc) when you are deciding how much penetration you want.
