Ok, I've been running this back and forth in my head trying to find the best defensive round for my 1911's. I realize there is no "magic bullet", but I do believe some are better that others.
Winchester Ranger T
Gold Dots
Golden Sabers
These are what I am considering as they are all very good bullets.
I can get the Ranger T's at a pretty good price, but I have to buy 500 rnds./$195 + shipping.
Georgia Arms has very good prices on Gold Dots, but they are only available in +P for .45. I just prefer not to shoot +P's in my 1911's, although it would probably be fine with an 18 1/2 lb. recoil spring. The 230 gr. are $13.75/50 plus shipping.
I really like the Golden Sabers. All of my 1911's love them and the bullet has very good expansion.
I have seen pics of these after being recovered and they all perform well. The Gold Dots and especially the Ranger T's really are impressive. Whatcha all think? I know there is somebody here that has more than likely fired the Georgia Arms ammo. ;D
Maybe I am putting way too much thought into this.

An interesting comparison of GA 230 gr.+P Gold Dots and S&B 230 gr. FMJ.
GA - velocity = 850 Energy (15') = 369
S&B - velocity = 853 Energy (muzzle) = 371
I know S&B is a little hotter than most standard factory ammo and both values will be higher right out of the muzzle, but it makes the +P look better to me.

I've shot thousands of rounds of S&B without a failure, but you are right: they are hotter rounds. Confession: on my more expensive pistols, I shoot Winchester White Box. However, I think you are talking about defensive rounds vs. shooting at paper - yes? If the guns mission is to save my life, I don't care about the punishment it takes from hot loads, but I'd practice a little with them just to make sure the gun digests them okay.

TMan; The Georgia Arms 185 gr, +P Gold Dot, Sheer Power Plus, will get 497 ft. lbs. of energy at 1100 fps, and the price is still $13.75 per 50 rds. I've fired the S&B 230 gr. fmj target stuff and followed up with the Speer Gold Dot, Winchester 230 gr. SXT, Remington 230 gr. Golden Saber, and the Federal 230 gr. Hydra-Shok; The recoil seems to be about the same in my CQB. I recommend that you buy 50 rds. of the georgia arms ammo and load it up after you finish off 50 rds of the other stuff.

DA, I haven't bought from Georgia Arms because no one carries it locally. Therefore, I'd have to pay shipping. Shipping isn't bad if you buy in quantities, but to just try it...
From previous posts, I know that you shoot it a lot, but I'm a little concerned with shooting re-loaded ammunition, although I notice they do have some new vs. reloaded. I'm not really concerned with a "ka-boom", but rather with a squib round. I wouldn't make any guarantees that with my double ear protection I would hear and notice the difference.
Roughly, in the time you have been using Georgia Arms ammo, how many rounds have you shot, and have you had any failures?
I picked up two boxes of Magtech 44 Magnum today. I've never shot it before, but it is a jacketed soft-point, and was less expensive than the jacketed hollow-point.

The Georgia Arms ammuntion company usually can be found at many of the shows throughout southern portions of the country, not to mention many shooting events. You can email them for information, or you can visit their news page when they have something posted. www.georgia-arms.com/news.htm

I am going to order some GA Gold Dots in .45 and 357 Sig to try them out. That is about the best deal out there on a good defensive round.
