I used to think that I was very recoil sensitive, but then I discovered that it wasn't the recoil that bothered me so much, it was the noise. When I bought ear muffs, I bout the best they had at Academy with a NPR of 31. Since then, I've starting wearing the foam ear plugs that also have a rating of 31. That gives me a total of 62. Yeah right, but realistically it is probably around 34. The problem with this new setup is that I have a little problem hearing the bell ringing at the range signaling that we should stop firing. This has resulted in some bad looks in my direction from the range officers, who, I might add, have guns. I was thinking about getting electronic ear muffs to replace the regular ones I have. However, I've noticed that they don't have as high NPR ratings as the muffs I currently have. Also, the ones with the higher ratings are more expensive. The other advantage of having the electronic ones is that I could hear people talking to me. Well, I guess that would be an advantage. So, does anyone use these things? Are they worth it? Are there certain ones that are better than others? Incidentally, I have small ear canals (what is between them is small too), and the foam ones that work the best for me are GloPlugz made by Gateway Safety. www.gatewaysafety.com

I use some very inexensive ones from Harbor freight. ~$20. I think their NRR is 24db. They work fine for the range, power tools etc. They only have one omnidirectional mic...so you can't tell exactly where the sound is coming from. (that means they suck for hunting, and explains why the good ones cost 10x as much.) I've had them for a while now, and have two complaints, I have a loose connection somewhere, and I have to occasionally give them a little tap to get them to turn on initially. Once they're on, the work fine. The other complaint is the mic is not protected all that well (go figure for $20) and moderate breeze blowing into the mic will trigger the limiter. I've been able to compensate for this most of the time by switching the muffs around, or taping over the mic. I use these with 33db plugs. www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46798I know quite a few guys use peltors and really like them.
