I just bought a Mossberg 500 for Home D purposes, what shotgun shell does one recommend for this purpose?
Thanks ahead of time.

Why do you like it? Has maximum hit effect?

Mitch; The reason I like this Buck Shot, is probably the same reason I like my Mossberg; Both were given to me, free of charge. The Mossberg came to me with one of those pistol grip stocks and forends, through my brother. A counter guy gave me a regular Hogue Stock and forend for it, I picked up on a barrel shroud at a gun show, a light mount and light somewhere else, a sling at another source, and one of those ammo carriers for the stock someplace else. I fiqure the Winchester ammo will hold up more during the years because I won't be using it. I have alot of different 12 GA. that people gives me but have mostly Winchester. I have some bird shot too, but I seldom hear of birds breaking in on people.

Ah... I want to have a good box of Home D shells, and then the rest either for plinking or snake shot for the occasional rattler that might appear.

So you guys that have shotguns for home defense: do you have night sights fitted on them? ;D
I know the shotgun has a lot of stopping power compared to a handgun, but it seems to me that the longer the barrel, the easier it would be to be deflected at close quarters. I mean who you were pointing it at could grab the barrel and point it away from them. I guess you would have to pull the trigger before they got to close.
I have 000 in my Derringer, which is back-up to my .45 ACP Ruger P90. I'm wondering though if the 460 XVR should be my home defense weapon. I know if someone pointed it at me and I saw those missiles in the cylinder, I'd be running for the bathroom.
By the way Mitch, I have a severe case of thread drift.

Ah... I want to have a good box of Home D shells, and then the rest either for plinking or snake shot for the occasional rattler that might appear. I have the rattler solution: the Bond Arms Snake Slayer that uses the .410 3" shells. They really spread out. You can shoot 45 Long Colt through it too, but I no longer do it after getting kicked off the range one day for destroying a target holder. Hey, what the heck do they make them out of wood for. The wood splinters were really flying.

LOL no problem...
Yeah, I figure my .45 needed a compnaion, and I always felt the sight and sound of a 12 gauge was as good a message sender as any.

Hey thanks for the info on the Snake Shot, I'll look into it. If you can't tell yet, I hate snakes (chilly willies brrr).

TMan; I have a Pro-Brite light mounted on the tubular magazine, with a coiled button extension mounted by velco on the slide pump. The on switch is activated by pressure applied to the slide.

00 buck is something akin to 9 9mm/.357 bullets in one shot.
