One morning in the Spring of 2003, I rushed into my favorite gun store with cash in hand to buy a stainless steel Springfield Loaded that I had seen the day before. It was sold, and I was pissed. The only stainless 1911 left in the case was a Series 80 NRM Colt Commander and I had the money. I bought it. It was a fortuitous morning and the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
My stainless Commander came to me with rubber grips and the usual sandblasted finish on the rounds. It had the dinky Colt attempt at a beavertail grip safety. It was not a looker, but after I took it into the range, I quickly saw it was a shooter. On the first few magazines I had a couple of failures to feed. Since then I have had no failures at all. Whether I use the Colt magazine or a Wilson Combat mag, this little 1911 will digest any ammo I toss it's way. To date it has over 3000 rounds down the pipe. At 25 feet it groups five shots under one inch if I bench the pistol. Free hand it will come close to the same if I do my part.
Over time my Commander has become the pistol that I really wanted that morning rushing into the gunstore. I went through several sets of grips, before I settled on the present ones. I polished the sandblasted rounds down to a more even satin finish after it started getting scuffed up. It now sports a Dlask trigger, which was the first trigger I ever installed. I also installed an Ed Brown memory groove grip safety on it, another first for me.
In addition I installed a Wilson Combat barrel bushing, an Ed Brown 20LPI checkered mainspring housing, an 18 pound Wolff mainspring, Novak rear sights, a King's extended thumb safety, and an Ed Brown extended magazine release. This pistol has become one of my all time favorites. I shoot it well, and am proud to say that I, myself, made it into what I wanted it to be.
