I rented a Ruger P97 today just for kicks. I was thinking it might make an adequate truck gun. The pistol is your standard Ruger P series fare in .45ACP. It was black with a hard plastic like frame. I'm sure it's some kind of Xeron nuclear composite BS. Plastic to me though.
I did not like the way the gun felt in my hand. The grip felt like a bar of soap trying to squeeze out of the top of my hand. The pistol was top heavy even with a full magazine. I have no idea how much mileage this particular pistol had, but it seemed to be in good shape, and not abused.
I shot 100 rounds of 230 grain hardball. There was noticeable stacking in double action mode, but even more disconcerting, in single action there was a faint creep and then a click and a bit more creep prior to firing. The slide of the pistol seemed to clank along the rails as it was fired. The pistol kept most of my shots inside the 8 ring at 25 feet. Recoil was manageable, and I had no failures of any sort.
The price on the pistol was $299. That seemed steep to me. For a bit more you could get a Springer Mil-Spec. I cannot say that I liked this pistol. I have held electric drills that fit my hand better. In fact, that is how this pistol felt in my hand. It's not a bad pistol per se, from what I understand, it's a very reliable pistol. It was decently accurate. It just was not the pistol for me.

I don't think that Ruger goes out of its way to make an overly pretty or overly accurate gun. My P89's accuracy is acceptable, I wish the P944 could be a little better, but at 10 yards I can group in 6".
They are very reliable, the only handguns I've owned that have not had a FTE, FTF or any other malfunction.
They seem bulky because everything on them is twice as thick as a Sig or a Glock. Interesting last night I compared the thumb-to-pointing finger distance on the P220 and the Ruger P944 (with Hogues) and it was almost identical.
--- edit ---
After shooting about 700 rounds through both of mine I finally broke down and got the Flitz, q-tips and steel wool out. After spending a couple hours of gentle polishing the trigger mechanism components they were much better. I cannot estimate how many additional rounds it would have taken to smooth the action.
