I couldn't wait to get home from China because I knew there was a S&W 460 XVR waiting for me.
The gun came with the "long" compensator installed. Looking through the box I did not find the other one, but found a card stating that it wasn't currently available, send in the card and we will send you the short compensator.
Okay, I knew one compensator was for lead bullets and the other for jacketed. So, what is with the long and short? It required a call to S&W who told me that the long one, which I have, is for the lead bullets, but you could shoot jacketed ones through it too.
The gun comes with the green fiber-optic sight installed and in the box is the gold-dot sight. I've previously used a gold dot sight, and they do work very well, but this green dot is very visible, and I think I'll leave it on the gun.
This gun weighs 4.6lbs, and just dry-firing it has clearly indicated to me that I need to start working out with weights. After holding it up for several seconds I noticed the front sight shaking. Consequently, I'm not expecting to set any accuracy records.
Guess what: nobody local has the ammo, nor does MidwayUSA have it in stock. They also aren't accepting back-orders. So, it looks like I'm going to have to shoot 454 Casull in it for awhile.
Trigger: the trigger is quite wide and smooooth. The double-action is heavy and my gauge just reads "over". The single-action mode is very nice and reads an average of 3lbs 12oz. It feels like a lot less than that because of the wide trigger. I hate to admit it, but the trigger in SA mode is better than either my 627 or 629, which came from the Performance Center. The designers really got this thing right for SA anyhow. Also, there is absolutely zero creep. Out of the box, I'm extremely impressed with the trigger. I have no plans to modify it.
Another thing that I really like about the gun is the grips. They are a soft rubber and completely cover the back-strap. When the back-strap is open, as it is with my 44 Magnum (S&W 629), the recoil is transmitted through the metal strap to the palm of the hand. This way there is something to absorb it.
Another great thing is the trigger guard. That may sound silly, but the gun I was shooting today was a Uberti .357 Magnum using S&B ammo. The trigger guard was slapping into the top of my middle finger and was uncomfortable. It forced me to apply more pressure with the shooting hand than I liked, which had a negative effect on my accuracy. There is no way that the trigger guard could hit my finger on this gun.
The hammer is very wide, which makes me happy because it makes it easier to use in SA mode.
The only thing that I don't like is the heavy DA mode. I think the spring is much heavier than what it needs to be. I used new snap-caps and the indentation made by the firing pin was a big one.
It looks like it may be awhile until I get the .360 S&W Magnum ammo, but when I do, I'll update this thread and modified the Subject line.
So far my initial pleasure quotient on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 9. If the double-action mode wasn't so heavy it would be a 10. It has far exceeded my expectations. I was tempted to wait for a Performance Center edition, but I'm glad that I didn't.
Santa may get a short list from me this year. ;D
