It was a long wait to receive this pistol, but the day finally arrived. First impressions:
1) At least with a Wilson you get more than one magazine.
2) According to the instructions, there should be a 1/16" allen wrench to adjust the sights. There wasn't one, but there were two sheets concerning the installation and adjustment of the sights.
3) Lots of oil on this baby.
4) Dry-firing showed that the trigger was initially creepy from time to time.
5) Very nice fit on everything on this pistol.
6) You could shave in your reflection from the feed-ramp.
7) Unlike certain Rugers I've received, there was no residue from the manufacturing process.
8) Good manual, but not unique to TargetMaster; it covers all models.
9) This is a handsome pistol:
Caliber 9mm, .45 ACP
Frame STI Single Stack Steel Government Length,
30 lpi front strap checkering,
steel mainspring housing w/ 30 lpi checkering
Grip Normal Rosewood Panels
Slide 6” Classic, Flat top
Slide Features STI Front & Rear Serrations, enlarged ejection port
Trigger STI long curved
Barrel STI fully supported, ramped bull barrel
Safeties STI Stainless Grip and ambi sided thumb
Guide Rod STI two piece steel
Sights Aristocrat Tri-Level adjustable
Mag Well STI Single Stack
Overall Length 9.5”
Weight 9mm - 46 oz.; .45 ACP - 44 oz.
Finish Matte Blue
Competition Approvals PPC
The pistol comes with the Aristocrat Auto-6 sights, which I knew nothing about. There is a cam on the side with 3 different settings. It corresponds to three screws that are on the top of the sight. So you can easily switch between settings. You can read more about it at: www.aristocratproducts.com/brochures/TS-6dj-inst.pdf
So, there I was at the range - forgot to get an allen wrench, and forgot to bring the sheet of instructions for how to do it.
The Range Officer (RO) decided that I needed his comments while I was shooting it. After the first 5 rounds hitting low, I wondered if the RO was making me nervous and I was flinching. Then I remembered the sights. I raised the POA several inches above the bullseye and put the next 5 rounds into the center of the target.
I only shot 50 rounds because the RO was really getting on my nerves. He said that he could buy one from a dealer he knew for $900. He then went on to say that he couldn't see spending that much on a pistol.
As expected, operation of the pistol was flawless. The creep that I noticed earlier hasn't returned. There may have been a little crud on the engagement surfaces.
One of the things I noticed was how easy it was to operate the slide. I think they use a lighter spring because of the pistol being chambered in 9mm vs. 45 ACP.
The trigger seemed a lot lighter than the 3-1/2lb it measured and was very crisp.
The RO said that the STI's were just as good as Wilson's. I must agree. He said the only 1911's that were better were the Rock River ones.
