On some short barrel magnum revolvers, the ejector rod is too short to fully eject the spent cases. To fix this problem, the extractor cutout requires lengthening, in order to accomodate a longer extractor rod. When the cutout is lengthened, it also removes the extractor lock, it then becomes necessary to install a Ball & Detent lock on the cylinder yoke. Some believe that this provides even better stability to the cylinder lock up.
