Has anyone else tried the awesome VZ Gator Back grips, by John Van Zyck? I am a staunch fan of checkered hardwood grips, so these babies were a departure for me. I have acquired a Springfield GI Champion to backup my Springfield Mil Spec (now in SA Custom Shop). I wanted to find some nice ebony double diamond grips to match the beautiful ones made for my Mil Spec by Scott Sensing. Scott doesn't have ebony right now, and the Ahrends ebonies I ordered turned out to be a far cry from Mr. Sensing's outstanding custom grips, so they went right back to Brownell's. I figured if Ahrends didn't satisfy me, no other mass-produced wood grips would either. I decided to go with some kind of synthetic grips, and console myself that they were utilitarian. Picked these VZ Micarta grips, based on rave endorsements on 1911forum. Mine are the black paper variety. All I can say about them, without writing a short story, is that, if you like grippy grips that don't bite or cling on clothes, you will really love these. Also, these grips are curiously porous, sorta like wood, and do not get clammy after holding them for a while, like plastic or rubber grips do. I was skeptical, but now I'm hooked. You really have to try them to understand. Here's a pic (sorry if it's large, but I did reduce the file size):
