I went to mount a scope using Millet Windage Adjustable rings. These rings have screws on both sides. This allows you to move the scope to adjust windage. As I set the scope into the rings, it dawned on me that I could end up with the the rings not being in alignment, which could really damage the scope. What I needed was something straight that has 1" diameter. Therefore, I went to Home Depot and got a 3' section of 3/4" black-pipe, which has a OD of 1:. It was a little dirty; so I sprayed it with "Power Blaster", and wiped it off with a cloth. That was educational. Black pipe is called that because it is painted black. "Power Blaster" is an effective paint remover. As they say in Texas: "Sur' nough" the pipe was not centered over the barrel. I then adjusted the rings to center it, removed the pipe and dropped in the scope. Now I need to find a place to store the black pipe where I'll be able to find it again when I need it. Oh, if you want to be really accurate, there is a tool by Wheeler to adjust the rings and lap them too. www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=227261

TMan; I have the same Millet rings you are referring to that I once used on one of my Buckmarks. On my Rifles and my Revolvers, I use the one piece ring mounts where the rings are made to the mount. Only problem with the ring mounted mounts is the fact that the scope has to be removed in order to remove the mount on a few of the mounts. One exception to this is the mount with the AR-15 flat top mount, where side mounted retaining knob type screws are used to secure the mount. While talking about the AR-15, the scope mount for the carry handle can be attached and detached with a bottom retaining knob screw thus eliminating the need to remove the scope from the rings for removal. For someone mounting their own scopes, using the indivdual adjustable rings, the Wheeler Engineering Scope Ring Alignment and Lapping Kit would be a good investment. A tool like this could pay for itself very easy among a group of friends.
