This is an interesting little modification that can buy you an extra 4 rounds over the factory standard P228 capacity. You need a Mec-Gar 17RD P226 9mm magazine and an X-Grip magazine adapter. Mec-Gar is the current OEM for most Sig magazines. They also market their own with a different follower and spring to make the P228 15RD's and the P226 9mm 17RD's. The newer style magazines have a slightly longer baseplate than the original JP Sauer & Sohn magazines, so you have to either remove about .080" or use German base plates. About 1 minute on a bench grinder and you are set. The adapter covers your work. Another interesting note; the X-Grip to convert P220 magazines into 8RD P245 magazines is the exact part Sig uses to accomplish this. This is really not bad as far as adapters go. The extension is minimal. Here is a couple that I did. I have never been a big fan of 9mm except for plinking, training and competition. I have recently come to enjoy the $5-6/box of ammo which makes for a reasonably inexpensive range session. If you don't mind carrying 9mm, 17+1 is not a bad way to go.

Those don't look bad at all. That sure is a handful of nines. Is the adapter expensive?

Yes it is quite a capacity. The P228 is basically the same size as a P229 so I would rather carry 12+1 of 357SIG in my P229. The X-Grips are a little pricey at $11.95 each for the P228 and $12.95 for the 1911 Officers and P245.
