What's your vote on a 9mm carbine?
You can get a new Berretta Storm for about $600-$700. Pretty gun, but I don't know how it shoots. 16.6inch barrel Big downside, 10 round magazine.
Ruger PC9 Carbine. More of a rifle style carbine than an assault rifle style carbine. 16.5" barrel. Uses the same magazine as the Ruger 89 series.
The AR-15 comes in a 9mm varient. That was a surprise to me.
The Marlin Camp 9 Carbine. Again more of a rifle carbine, but comes with a 15rd magazine and can use S&W Model 59 mags.
How about a slightly used Calico 900 with a 50 or 100 round helical magazine?
Of course, for accuracy, I couldn't beat my dad's Puma .38 lever action.

klmhq, I bought a new Marlin Camp carbine in 9mm several years ago for $225. I bought it so I could have a pistol caliber carbine for a companion for my 9mm pistols. Mine came with a 10 round mag. but I have several 15 round mags. I recently traded for a S&W 5906 9mm pistol, that uses the same magazines. Now I have a carbine that I can shoot on the pistol range.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you're looking for something bigger than a .22 to plink with, but smaller than the more common hunting calibers, then it is a good choice. For big game hunting it is not that good of a choice. Here's a site that compares the common hunting calibers with some of the typical handgun calibers www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_rifle_cartridges.htm Unfortuanately, no 9mm compared. It also has a lot of historical info on the development of these rifles. I've been thinking of a 9mm or a .357 for my collection, to plink with as well as small, close range varmint extermination. FWIW I've been leaning towards a Ruger, or a Marlin. I've heard once or twice from people that the marlin jams with hotter loads. I've not shot the marlin yet, so I can't speak on it from personal experience. If you're looking for something with more than 10rds. As you said, the Ruger takes the same mags as the P89, and hi cap mags are easy to find. I have several 16-18 rd mags, and I know there are 21-30rd mags out there as well, they look kinda strange hanging out the bottom of a handgun(IMO). I know the Marlins use the same mags as the S&W 59/69 and these are also available in up to 30rds (possibly more) I just haven't looked very hard for them...yet.

Don't forget you can still get Hi Cap M92 mags that will work in the Storm. I have shot blackdogs a few times. It's very fun and accurate to boot. Doc

I can't say anything knowledgable or informed about the others, but I can highly recommend the Beretta. I absolutely love that thing. As Doc said, it's fun AND accurate. Also, it has so many rails that you can add more accessories than you know what to do with. Hi-cap pre-ban 92 series mags fit it, and you can get 30 round mags, too. In a word... fun. It's also simple and reliable. It's ridiculously easy to strip and clean, and I haven't had a single failure of any kind. It's available in 9mm, .40, and .45, but get the 9mm. Cheap ammo = more time spent shooting it, imo.
