Kaotic; There are so many copies of the AK around the world, and I would be the last to pick out a good copy, without doing alot of research.I found these Romanian AKs on Gunbroker, from Atlantic Arms; I do not know how good these are, but $329. is the going price. www.atlanticfirearms.com/

i have a romanian AK. It is a SAR-1. When looking to buy one, (romanian or otherwise) make sure you get the right caliber (not all are 7.62x39) AND make sure you find out if it accepts high capacity mags. If the ak is going for around $200, then most likely it will not accept standard high capacity mags. getting a NIB SAR-1 should run you around $300-$330, with at least two or three mags. The one i found gave me two 30 round mags and one 40 round mag included. great shooter...shot thousands of rounds of wolf through it, never a single jam, FTE, nothing.

Kaotic - Here's some other links for more info: www.ak-47.netwww.ar15.com (they have an AK section in the forums) I've been researching them for several months now. The relatively best AK out of the box version in the US is apparently the Arsenal, Inc. (Bulgaria) out of Nevada. www.arsenalinc.com. One of their main distributors is www.gunsnstuff.net. Unfortunately the milled receiver, standard capacity magazine versions are hard to come by. Price is about $541 from gunsnstuff, but I see people asking $700 on the auction boards. Apparently a lot of love goes into these guns, and they are very accurate for an AKM (modern AK). Robinson Armament imports a Russian PKM variant called the VEPR. They are somewhat heavier than a standard AK but supposedly more accurate. Again, these are in the $550 range new. Gotta love an accurate gun you can pour sand into and fire $69/1000 rounds out of all day without a problem. Krinkovs are a short barrel version of an AKM, but I think they use a standard AK receiver. I'm planning on just holding out until the AWB expires in September so I can get an under folder with a bayo lug and every other "evil" feature available. I'll name it Diane's Nightmare. ;D After some research it looks like it would be practical, given adequate blueprints, to fabricate and assemble everything except the barrel with hand tools. This probably explains why it is so popular in poorer countries.

I have the Arsenal SA M 5s in .223, Century's SAR-3 in .223, and Century's WASR-10 in 7.62 x 39. The Arsenals, Robinson VEPRs and Russian Izhmash AKs are about the highest quality, but also the costliest. www.Ak-47.net is a good link for info on others like Yugos. Arsenal's SAMs come in two calibers, Century's SARs came in three calibers, and are now scarce, so it's your choice. On the cheapie Centurys, watch out for canted front sight assemblies that aren't mounted straight on the barrel, and also for crooked gas blocks (the black rounded part midway on top of the barrel.) Put the butt on the floor & look down towards the barrel and you can get a rough picture if they're mounted straight in relation to the rear sight, receiver, & back end. It's widely held that Century uses retarded monkey labor to assemble their products, but their AKs do work and give a lot of bang for the $. On the Arsenals, try out hicap magazines to see if they fit in the magwell - some don't despite their claims. Don't hold your breath waiting for the AWB to sunset - the entire apparatus of leftist media & politics will be working this summer against that happening.

Krusty, with the scope rail on the SA M5s, is it possible to mount a weaver type scope? or just the east bloc scopes?
Thanks!

I haven't tried scopemounting my SAM yet, but it's the standard AK siderail. CDNN - www.cdnninvestments.com/ak.html - has several plain AK side mounts with Weaver or Picatinny rails on top for scope mounting, check them out. With one of those & rings you should be in business. HTH
