Just curious (from something said in another thread)(sorry about the rhyme) what your favorite deer and/or big game cartridge is. In the thick Maine woods, I use a Winchester model 94, chambered in .375 WIN. wonderful round that is powerful enough to take down anything in N.America. i wouldn't recommend it for great distance though, but that may be because my only experience with it is through open sights. I am also trying to rebuild a 30'06 that I have. It was my grandfathers, and he bought it at Sears, many years ago. It is a Higgins. basically its a mauser action. The receiver/barrel was made by FN in Belgium. It was a great shooter until the stock broke. I can't wait to use the '06 again!

I'll move this post over here, probably more appropriate. If I had to choose only one overall big game rifle cartrige it would be the Winchester 270. It's fast, accurate and has adequate stopping power for antelope, deer, elk & moose although I wouldn't shoot a moose farther than 150yds (not that difficult to get that close) nor would I shoot an elk at farther than 300 yds. It also doesn't punish you as bad as shooting things like a 300 win mag which makes practicing much more pleasant.
Moved from previous post.
"i'll bite........LONG LIVE THE 30'06!!"
Ah, the old '06/270 debate. I actually like the 30'06 cartrige. The choice comes down to preference of a slight advantage in velocity & trajectory in the 270 vs a slight advantage in Energy in the 30'06.
....................................270.............................30'06
Muzzle Ft-Sec/Ft-#'s/Trj...3060/2702/+1.4".......2800\2872\+1.8"
100 yds................2845/2335/+1.3..........2597/2470/+1.6
200yds................2639/2009/Zero...........2403/2115/Zero
300yds................2442/1721/-6.4.............2217/1800/-7.9
400yds................2254/1467/-18.6.........2039/1523/-22.8
500yds................2076/1243/-37.7.........1870/1281/-46.2
Ballistics for Remmington AccuTip Boattail 130g for 270 & 165g for 30'06.
As stated above I opt for the 270 but there are a lot of good cartriges out there.

Good topic...
My all-purpose big game rifle is a bolt-action Winchester Model 70 Black shadow w/24" barrel and custom thumbhole stock. Sitting on top of it is a Sightron 4-16x42mm scope. It is chambered for the .300WinMag. It is an extremely flat shooter, and has the power to knock down everything from mule deer to moose. It is a great round for the long distance shooting that Idaho provides.
I also use a semi-auto Winchester Model 100 w/20" barrel chambered for the .308, which makes an excellent brush gun when hunting whitetail in Minnesota.

For deer in the Northeast, rifle isn't an option. Hard to beat a 12 ga 3" magnum round. An ounce of lead is a stopper.
Simple setup for me: Old Rem 870 express with open sights. Well, I put the fiber optic ones on last year, but open nonetheless.
Edit: I should have restricted my comment to NY. I understand that you can take deer with a rifle in PA.

I have used a .270 Winchester for deer for more than 20 years and have never found any reason to want to go to another round. When I still hunt in thick woods, I go to a 12 gauge with buckshot.
That being said, an uncle recently gave me his .30-06 FN which I am looking forward to using this year. By the way, it has a recoil pad, which I never felt the need for with the .270.
I also am pleased with the .25-06's performance on the few occasions have I hunted with it.
Edited for typos...

Is it that common to restrict deer hunting to shotguns? In Maine we can use a rifle or a shotgun. edited for typo

There's always muzzleloading and archery season too. But no rifle here in NY. Pistol is ok too, but it's not really the optimal tool for the job.

Small Talk:
I'm not a deer hunter and have no rifle, but my buddy is bugging me to get a rifle so he can take me hunting next year. He shoots a Winchester Model 70 .270 WSM (I think) and has recommeded .270, .270WSM, or 30-06.
Noting the ballistics data shown above, I see that with the .270 you sacrifice a little energy for a slightly flatter trajectory. I personally want one with ample power even though the deer around here wouldn't require it. I may have opportunity for wild boar and antelope if things pan out. What say ye, men? Is there something else I should be looking at?

If you are Texan born and bred you know that the .270 may be the most popular deer cartridge going in the Lone Star state. 270 WSM will allow you to get a shorter action, lighter rifle but you will pay more for the ammo. The 30-06 is a classic, of course, and I would go with that round if you ever expect to hunt wild boar. You can go up over 200 grain in that whereas most .270 typical oadings are 150 or 130 grain, the round it built its reputation on.
