yeah so i picked up one of these for 125 bucks out the door last night. old s/w 18" 12 ga shotgun. it's beat to heck on the outside and has "garage only" painted on the stock, but it's brand freakin new on the inside, which is where the business happens anyway. then they gave me a free box of tactical 00 gauge shotshells and gave me a $25 bag for 20. freakin cool, except i need to sand down the stock and maybe refinish it or something. i don't want it to be particularly shiny, but at the same time i don't want flat brown or black...
any ideas, anyone?

It may be easier to replace the stock rather than refinish it. I don't imagine that they are all that expensive.

not a bad idea...
so i took the shotgun to the range tonight, and something interesting happened. at 10 yards, not only did the slugs and the 00 guage buckshot leave holes in the target and backer, but so did the plastic piece that holds all that crap in there. either way this old shotgun, whether it's shooting slugs or pellets, will lay a serious hurting on the target.
