I haven't shot a .22 rifle in a long time. I recently acquired 2 .22 rifles and shot them both this past weekend. I only went out with the .22s and my SKS. No handguns this time. First time in a long time for that too.
I had a great time plinking away at stuff. I blew a bunch of ammo sighting in a scope, and didn't feel bad about it. I bet I shot close to 400rds that afternoon. No recoil, light guns, accurate, relatively quiet, inexensive to shoot. Why did I stop shooting them?
Makes me want to buy a new/used Ruger Mark II or III even more. Moved it up a couple notches on the buy list. Or perhaps a buckmark, but I think I like the rugers better.
Then I shot about 50 rds through my SKS. Kinda fun to make milk jugs explode too. The .22 was fun, but couldn't do that for me. The SKS is fun to shoot too, but, more recoil (not bad though), MUCH heavier (I have a yugo 59/66), not as accurate (I haven't finished sighting it in yet, but it still won't be as accurate as my .22s), much noiser, more expensive to shoot (but still cheap $0.10/rd)

I've toyed with the idea of getting a .22 rifle, but I have no idea what to get. Any suggestions?
I shot a friends Remington 700, I think it was .223, but it didn't do anything for me. Both shots were bullseyes, so I didn't think it was too much of a challenge. Maybe at further distances.
I have 3 Rugers, but one is a Mark III. I also have 3 Buckmarks, and I have to agree with you - I like the Rugers better. I shoot as well with the Brownings, but they just don't seem as sturdy as the Rugers (they were a lot cleaner inside than the Rugers though).
I'm also toying with the idea of a Volquartsen, but I have to be a little more careful with puchases this year than last. Running out of storage room in the safes, and running out of money too. ;D
Whoops, nearly hi-jacked another thread, but I did talk about the .22 rifels.

I only toy with the 22 rimfires but I do have one rifle that shoots pretty good. I started with a Ruger 10/22 target rifle, replaced the entire trigger group housing with a Volquartsen 2000 Trigger Guard, I installed a bolt stop buffer, replace the factory stock with a Choate carbon fiber with cheek rest, added a Harris Bi-Pod, and a Leopold Scope with the one piece mount. This gave me a pretty good little plinker, and the heavy Bull Barrel of the Ruger Target stays right on the X from one shot to the next.

Milk jugs are too big a target for a .22 rifle anyway. Set up a line of Dixie cups filled with water. Same effect, different scale.

Tman, as far as .22 rifles go the Ruger 10/22 is probably the most popular. It also has a huge aftermarket supply of goodies to dress it up to your liking.

The guys at my hunting club and I still get a kick out of shooting aluminum cans filled with water. They get really interesting when you use Yellow Jackets, Stingers or CCI Mini Mags. No doubt when you hit one.

I like the rugers. I have a 77/22. On my best days, I can cover a 5 shot group with a quarter at 50 yds. Any given day I can cover a 5 shot group with a nickel at 25 yds. I haven't had any work done to the gun either. It's right out of the box.
