Two controversial rifles there. People either love them, or hate them, very few in between. The people that like the .30 carbine will speak of its durablilty, light recoil, and reliability. Opponents will tell you it is not reliable, it is a weak load, on an old design/platform. The Ruger fans say the mini14 is a great and accurate gun, nice and light, and I won't go into detail of the .223, there's a lot of info on it already. Opponents complain that the accuracy is poor. I have observed that many people that complain about the accuracy of the mini14 are trying to treat it like an AR15. What I mean it this, the mini14 was designed to be a lightweight rancher type gun, not one for rapid fire, or 1000rd outings. I don't think the barrel is made to handle the heat build up and then accuracy suffers. Maybe things are different now, as it has been several years since I looked at the mini14.
My opinion is the .223 is a better all around caliber than the .30 carbine. Now if you went to a M1A in .308, that's a different story. The .223 readily available at just about any store that sells ammunition. Also available for the .223 a bunch of mil-surp ammo. I don't know for sure, but I think a .357mag out of a carbine approaches the power of the .30 carbine.

For a rifle to haul around and plink with the Mini 14 is definately the more versatile of the two. There is a lot of in-expensive ammo out there in hollow point, soft point, ballistic tip and FMJ. From what I've seen with the 30 carbine you're pretty much stuck with FMJ.
