Any idea how difficult it would be to remove the grenade launcher from the muzzle of the SKS? It looks like it is riveted on vs. being pinned. If I removed it, would it lower the value of the rifle? What value - the sales tax on my CQB was more than I paid for the SKS. What I liked about the SKS was that it was brand new i.e. never issued, and the wood on the stock has some beautiful grain compared to others that I've seen. That and the price, since she sold it to me for her cost, and it is a Yugoslavia make vs. Chinese.

Hey, that is a great site. Sometimes I forget there are other things on the internet other than this forum, and the manufacturers' sites.
I thought removing this would be a little difficult, it looks like it is even more difficult than I imagined. Also, when you are done, you have a threaded barrel. Think I'll live with it.

as far as ruining the value...as you said, what value? Currently, Yugo SKS's are cheap, and plentiful, even in unissued condition, most are selling for ~$150 or so around my neck of the woods. The Russians are around $300 or so. As you probably know by now, you can always put the GL back on. (Some states have laws about threaded bbls, and modifications to them.) The SKS is one of my favorite plinking rifles... 1. the gun was inexpensive 2. the ammo is as cheap as 9mm 3. minimal recoil 4. easy to care for Some don't even bother with this part, just buy another one. I'm too high strung for that. 5. tons of aftermarket parts, if you choose to tinker. Many people think that it is a horrible thing to "bubbasize" a SKS. To each his/her own. Do what you like, buy a couple if you want. I plan on buying a peep site for mine this fall, Tech Sites is coming out with a sweet looking new product. I also have a receiver mounter scope. Again a major point of contention among SKS owners. yes, there are better scope set-ups than what I use, but I have a hard time spending a couple to several hundred dollars on a scope/mount for a $150 gun, that was never intended to be a sniper or target gun. 6. did I mention cheap ammo? 7. goes boom every time I want it to. 8. I'll stop there TMan, Did you have to take the cosmoline off, or was that done for you? The two major things to double check on the cleaning, make sure the firing pin is free to rattle around (just shake the bolt, and you'll know) and the second is the gas valve. There is no firing pin retention spring, it is a free floating pin, so you don't want it sticking. Well for that matter, you don't want any firing pin stuck forward. The gas tube, and valve can cause some reliability issues if gummed up with cosmo. I know already, you're going to hate the trigger. They are all very hard. The reduced power spring set really helps, but is a real PITA to install. Also polishing up the sear some and of course some action magic, or moly helps quite a bit too. Surplusrifle.com has some info on this as well. Just remember, this gun was never intended to have a target/match trigger. They can be had though. I used to have the info on a guy that does them. I can look around if you'd like. another decent site... www.simonov.net/Sorry, I'm a bit long winded tonight. I've been away for a couple weeks.

ok, I'm not done yet. I thought I'd include the link for tech-sights- www.tech-sights.com/there are other options too. Lyman, williams firesight, and a couple others I can't recall. I like the new TS200 as it is fully adjustable, and just looks cool too.

No, I had to take the cosmoline off, and throughly clean the rifle. I was glad that it was coated because I'd hate to admit how long this rifle set out in the garage.
I had a slight mishap trying to put the hammer back in: I had the trigger assembly clamped into the vise horizontally, but not tight enough. It slipped and something went across the back of my hand. Hey, if we didn't have mishaps, would there be any need for first-aid kits?
You are right about the trigger. I stoned it (lightly) and polished it, and it still is terrible. It makes me much more satisfied with the Bushmaster trigger, which I spent a lot of time on, but is still ever the so creepy. I'll order the spring kit for it from Wolff.
Actually, I'm going to order another SKS. I picked up the folding stock (plastic), but then I got to looking at the grain of the wood on mine. I really like the wood, so I'll refinish it (can't decide on birch or walnet), and order another SKS to go on the folding plastic stock.
My dealer recommended the SKS over the AK-47. She thought I would like it better, and it costs less.

It seems like your dealer knows you pretty well. I don't recall you say she's steered you wrong. She seems to know your likes pretty well.
Today, I shot my SKS and my friends. He has done no trigger work on his. I THOUGHT my trigger wasn't good, until I shot his again. Mine feels pretty good, except for the 1/4 mile of takeup it has. I shot mine with the standard sights, and shot at least as good, if not better than his with a 4X scope on it. On another note, I shot yet another old .22 that I came into. (I seem to be attracting these like a magnets recently) Another old winchester, trigger is like pulling the bumper off my old truck, despite that, it shoots pretty well.

Even my secondary dealer, where I buy my used, and some new guns, knows me well. He said the Browning salesman was in the other day and told him that they were coming out with a new super Buckmark. He thought of me and ordered one for me. He must have been getting in touch with his feminine side - spending my money. Now that my primary dealer's kids are back in school, I'm going to take her to the range when I get back to the U.S. She has been wanting to shoot some of the toys she has sold me. She is just a little bit of a thing so it can't be the .44 Magnum. Wonder if she is going to get me a 460 XVR?

With all of the guns you've bought from her, you'd think she'd be taking you out to the range, or a cruise maybe.

MLB, it is a private range for members only, which is why I'm taking her as a guest. Also, and I don't mean to sound defensive, she doesn't have that big a mark-up. I've bought quite a few guns from her that I just saw on the shelves, and those she has sold to me at her cost just to get them out of inventory.
The other thing is that I'm a real pain-in-the-a$$ because of the amount of time she has to spend on the phone getting me stuff that isn't readily available.
And just think how much my stock will go up with the other members at the shooting range when I show up with this young, attractive, blonde. ;D
