My original plan to get an M1 was to drive up to Camp Perry in Ohio, and buy one from the North Store. The problem is their store inventory does not have the condition I want. Doing a little research, I've learned that they do not stock the store, until all backorders have been filled. I've also learned they have quite a backorder log, so it may be a long time before service grade and better M1's make back to the store shelves. The buying frenzy for M1s has incresed dramatically in the past year. It seems that the rate has increased even more since the carbines sold out last year. I don't know if people are afraid of not getting an M1, or they are stocking up for an investment, or substituting the M1, for the carbine, but they are going pretty fast. Same with the M1903's. The CMP estimates they have enough 03's to last until sometime in 2007 at current rates. A few years for m1s, and "years" of ammo left.
The short story, that became long... I placed an online order for my Garand, and have at least a 3 week wait on it. I still plan on going up their in about 2 weeks to buy an 03, and a few cases of 30-06.
Hopefully this won't take as long as Tman's Taurus 1911!

From the COO of the CMP, posted on 5/7/06
There will be receivers coming up for sale in the next couple months.
So, if you are wanting an 03 with a military stock, better get it soon. If you are wanting to build one, wait a couple months.
If the price is right, I may buy a 03A3 receiver for a project rifle down the road.

I still haven't done much work on the M1 yet. I have the 03's about ready. Home improvements keep getting in the way. I'm now working on the hallway to one of the staircases I renovated, and trying to get a dining room renovated. Man, I don't like refinishing floors. These are old fir floors that had been painted about 4 times. Anyhow, what I was going to add... If anyone is considering buying the nicer grades of Garands from the CMP, now is the time. Again, from the keyboard of the COO, He estimated that the Correct grades ($900) and the Collector grade ($1400) will be all sold out by 8/06. They just recently sold out of the H&R corrects, but SA correct grade are still available. www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/index.htm

The other thing about the North Store is knowing when the truck arrives. If you keep an eye on the Mil-Surp forums, sometimes you can pin that down. I showed up there one day after the new stock started hitting the shelves and found a nice Service Grade Springfield. If I have an endless supply of money, I would just keep buying as many nice ones as my yearly allowance was. These will dry up one day and will probably be worth quite a lot more than you have to pay today.
