CMP has announced that the Army has transferred a substantial amount of M1 Carbines to them for sale. Prices have been getting pretty high on these due to high demand and low supply. The CMP prices haven't been disclosed yet, but I bet you will be able to get a nice rifle for $500 or less.

If I had a use for a single shot .22, I'd look long and hard at the $150 kimber, and put a scope on it.
But I need to save my pennies for the carbines.
