Sigarms introduced their entry for the .40 S&W chambering with the Compact Size P-229, weighing empty at 32 ounces, with a slide which is machined from a solid billet of stainless steel, having a total measurement of 7.08 inches long and 1.46 inches wide. With a barrel length of 3.86 inches, a double column 12 rd. magazine, and interchangeable barrel compatibility with the .40 S&W and 357 sig, this pistol has become a favorite of mine. Dang, that's a pretty gun. You know what though? If you replace the wood grips with black checked plastic and refinish in Starval it looks just like my wifes old Star .40...

KLM; I reckon they are percieved to have a certain beauty about their appearance in some way, but it's their functional beauty that attracted me to these pistols for the most part. The nickel finish contributes alot to the lubricity of the slide to frame rails; I found this out years ago with my satin nickel Series 70 Colt Combat Commander.

Hey DA,
What's the weight of that 229 nickel fully loaded? I'm trying to decide at the moment between a 229 and another gun on weight.

9mm; With everything I have in front of me, on the weight of the 229, nothing provides a weight on the loaded pistol. With the new ban having sunsetted, the full capacity 13 rd. magazines are being offered. Some give the unloaded weight as being 31.5 oz, but Sigarms listed the unloaded weight as 29.3 oz. You can compare the unloaded weight for both pistols because the ammunition will weigh the same if it's of the same caliber and capacity. For a less expensive, smaller, and lighter carry counterpart to the 229, I usually grab my 239. It's only seven rounds, but makes the same size holes as the 229.

9mm; The various weights of the 229 are because of the weight of the empty magazine, which weighs 3.0 oz. Sigarms has the pistol, without the empty magazine, weighing 27.5 oz. The full magazine capacity is 13 rds in 9mm, and 12 rds. for .40 S&W and 357 sig.

I wish I had an electronic grams scale at home, like I have at work. I took five different unloaded and loaded weights from five other pistols which took the ten round .40 S&W magazines. No where could I find the loaded weight on the Sig 229; So I compared the difference in weights for these other five pistols, and came up with an average of an 8 oz. increase for the loaded pistol. That would put the Sig 229 with a ten round loaded weight of approximately 40 oz.
