Based on the novel, "The Hunter" by Richard Stark, "Point Blank" brings Smith & Wesson's N Frame model 29, 44 magnum, in blue steel, with a four inch barrel to the big screen with an introduction like none I had seen for any handgun before. Based on the novel "The Hunter", director John Boorman provides detailed narration through the DVD version of this timeless classic. First time I saw this movie was 1967, the year of it's release, it was also the first time I saw a S&W Model 29 used in a motion picture. Although close examination of stills taken from the shooting of the movie reveals evidence of a Model 27, or stage prop gun, the shooting sequence at the first of the movie clearly shows that of a Model 29. Mel Gibson made a movie, also based on the same novel, called "Payback". The script used for Payback was, according to Boorman, one that Lee Marvin tossed in favor for the one adopted for Point Blank. Everytime I see or think about a blued S&W 29, with a four inch barrel, I think about this movie.
