When Bullet was released in 1968 it featured one of the best car chases in motion picture history, not to mention what it did for Ford's Mustang. Being that this is a Handgun Forum, I thought it to be also worth mentioning that this was one of the first times I took serious notice to the holster Steve McQueen was wearing in this movie. I had seen these in movies before, from the era of the late thirties and early forties. This particular holster was the Berns Martin Lightning, a holster which retained a short barrel revolver in an inverted postion, sandwiching the cylinders between a spring tension from the opening flap, down the length of the frame and barrel. When drawing the gun, one would pull on the grip to open the holster rather than pulling the holster from a pocket. Bianchi later acquired the design from Berns Martin to begin producing this holster design as the #9. This holster is noted for the speed of it's draw, especially from a seated position. Clint Eastwood also wore one for a mid frame revolver in the movie "The Gauntlet". I prefer the hammers to be bobbed or internal with these holsters because the hammer spur tears the leather surrounding the spring when the gun is drawn. This is one of mine.
