Whoops, think I may have screwed up again: I ordered a Lyman's Pistol Kit from MidwayUSA (hey, it was on sale). It came today and I was looking it over - then it dawned on me: it looks like in addition to the stick being unfinished, the barrel isn't finished either i.e. it hasn't been blued, parkerized, or anything.
Also, the kit is lacking instructions, but I figured out how the lockwork went, and I know how to sand down and finsh the stock, but what am I going to do about the barrel?

Well, there's always cold blue, but that's not going to look like the real thing. Maybe a duracoat of some sort, or a hard chrome? That would be original.

Thanks OT, but I was a little shocked at some of the prices. I don't want to spend 3 times the price of the kit to coat the barrel.
I'm leaning towards the "old school and brown it" because it looks like it is inexpensive and easy to apply. I'm not too wild about the thoughts of "painting" it, which would be the Duracoat type of coating, but if I was to go that route, the Aluma-Hyde II looks like it would be an easy route to go.
Has anyone tried the browning method?

Not really any harder than cold bluing. Acutally easier, just a bit more time consuming. I think it'd look good on a BP kit. If you don't want browning, hot blue, parkerizing, then you are left with cold blue. I've done cold blue as a touch up using various products with decent results. Back to your question, yes, I've browned metal before, but not with any fancy solutions. I did it with nice humid weather, a barn, and lots of time. The solutions just speeds it up considerably. I don't know about the three hours it claims though. A few folks I chatted with recently about it (since you asked) say it takes 12-24hrs for the first coat and a few hours after that, depending on relative humidity etc. keep the solution out of the bore and off the crown.

A case colored finish would be fun to try.
